Dick Offenhamer began his football career as a substitute on the freshman squad. In 1933, in his first varsity season, he scored three touchdowns, one on a 95-yard run. He was a right halfback in 1934 when Colgate lost only to Ohio State while beating undefeated Tulane and unbeaten Syracuse among its seven wins. He was at the same position in 1935 when the Red Raiders went 7-3. A three-year letterwinner in both football and baseball, Offenhamer was the top batter in his senior year, hitting .380 as a catcher and fielder. He was the intramural light heavyweight boxing champion for four years, and played pro baseball for both the PONY and Cape Cod leagues. As a football coach at Kenmore High School (Buffalo), Offenhamer posted an outstanding record of 60-19-2 over 11 years. His squad either tied or won the championship of the Niagara Frontier League eight years in a row. Offenhamer returned to Colgate in 1949 to take over as supervisor of freshman athletics, and served as an assistant football coach 1949-54. Once again Buffalo beckoned in 1955, this time as varsity football coach at the University of Buffalo, a school endeavoring to upgrade its football program. It was during this period that he amassed a record of 58 wins, 37 losses and 5 ties.
