The Colgate University Athletic Hall of Honor was founded to honor those persons who have made outstanding contributions to Colgate athletics. Its purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those persons who have brought distinction, honor and excellence for more than 120 years of our history to Colgate in athletics. The Hall is located on the ground floor of Huntington Gymnasium and occupies a prominent space readily accessible to all.

The Colgate University Athletic Hall of Honor was installed by Frederick H. Dunlap ‘50, Director of Athletics and Football Coach and Robert Deming ‘57, Associate Athletic Director, who presided over its dedication on June 2, 1979. The inspiration for the facility came from Class of ’27 president Pete Van Akin and his classmates during their 50^th reunion in 1977. Charlie Butler ’27, Gift Chairman, set up the mechanism for funding the project.

The first induction was performed on June 2, 1979 of charter members Everett D. Barnes ’22, Ellery C. Huntington, Andrew Kerr, William A. Reid ’18 and John “Jack” F. Rourke. Since then more than 200 men and women, athletes and individuals from many walks of life, have been enshrined. What they all have in common, as identified by the selection committee, is their dedication and service. They embody the legendary “Spirit that is Colgate”.

During the summer of 2011 a complete renovation of the Hall of Honor was undertaken. The design and execution are engaging. The wall bearing the inductees’ name plaques is finished in the blue stone of Huntington Gymnasium. At its center is the Colgate University bronze seal above a touch screen terminal which accesses the inductee database for viewing on two video screens. The other walls are covered with a panoramic image of the front and rear of Huntington Gymnasium circa 1936.

Colgate Athletic Hall of Honor inductions are performed biennially in the autumn and are celebrated by a morning reception when the name plaques on the dedication wall are unveiled followed by an evening testimonial dinner.

Hall of Honor Induction
The next Colgate Hall of Honor induction will take place in the Fall of 2026 in conjunction with a home football weekend. Nominations for the Hall of Honor are accepted on a rolling basis and may be submitted at any time at this link. Once nominated a candidate will remain under consideration for the next five induction cycles.
