John Beyer came to Colgate in 1962 and served as coach of the freshman soccer, basketball, and tennis teams while earning his Master of Arts degree in history and administration. Later, he served as director of Physical Education in 1973. While at Colgate, Beyer led the men’s soccer team to three national rankings and to the NCAA Tournament in 1966. He finished with his career with an overall record of 81–66–15 with the men’s team and coached six All-Region players and one All-American in Barry Small ’76. Beyer also recorded two years as the head coach of the women’s soccer team from 1982-83 and finished with an overall record of 22-10-1. In 2005, the men’s soccer head coaches chair was named in his honor. A 1951 graduate of Carroll College, Beyer was captain of the Pioneers' basketball and tennis teams.
