HALL OF HONOR
“Doc” Huntington commenced his duties as Colgate’s Director of Physical Education in 1900 after serving in the athletic departments at the University of Virginia and the University of Nashville. His tenure was interrupted by World War I. From those small beginnings in the old gymnasium, the work grew until at “Doc’s” retirement in 1935, the program consisted of eleven varsity sports. In 1924, the University paid tribute to the outstanding leadership of “Doc” by conferring upon him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science, and Huntington Gymnasium bears his name. He retired from active service with many honors; however, he continued as a quiet consultant behind the scenes. In 1940, he edited the Athletic Council’s publication of Fifty Years of Colgate Football.
