Dave MacKenzie distinguished himself in two collegiate sports, winning four varsity letters in hockey and soccer. In hockey, he was Colgate's most valuable player in his junior season, while leading the Red Raiders in scoring with 19 goals and 30 assists for 49 points. He finished his career with 48 goals and 75 assists for 123 points, placing him sixth at the time on the school's all-time scoring list. He won the 1978 Rob Ries Memorial Award, given to the player who provided the most inspiration and leadership. In soccer, MacKenzie was twice second team all-New York State, and once first team all-New York State. He was Colgate's leading scorer and most valuable player in his junior and senior seasons. He played several seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League after graduation.
