HALL OF HONOR
Jim Welsh lettered four years at guard on the Colgate football team (1920-23) and was the recipient of The Skull and Scroll Football Trophy, given annually to the player who “is the greatest asset to the team throughout the season.” Welsh won the trophy three straight seasons, thus permanently retiring the cup. Many sports writers called him “the best guard in the east.” In 1922, he ran interference for All-America Eddie Tryon against Columbia in a 59-6 win for Colgate. Tryon amassed a school-record five touchdowns and Welsh kicked a 40-yard field goal in the win. In a 23-23 tie game with Ohio State in 1923, he again ran interference for Tryon and was directly responsible for three touchdowns. Honorable mention All-America for two years, Welsh played professional football with Philadelphia, Buffalo and the famous Pottsville Maroon. He was also underclass heavyweight boxing champion.
