Fred Dunlap was a two-year letterwinner in football and wrestling during his undergraduate days at Colgate. He returned to his alma mater in 1976 as athletic director and head football coach. As head football coach, he became the second winningest coach in the school’s history, guiding the Red Raiders to a solid 77-49-3 mark in 12 campaigns, and two NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances. He was selected University Division District I Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association on two separate occasions, and 22 of his players earned All-America recognition. He also was named the “Man of the Year” by the Walter Camp Football Foundation in 1977. Along the way, his teams set school marks for passing and total offense. Colgate’s 1977 team, which set a school record for wins in a season (10), led the nation in total offense, and four other Dunlap squads were ranked in the top ten. Dunlap was athletic director at Colgate for 15 years. During his tenure as athletic director many of the Red Raider athletic teams enjoyed tremendous growth. He also oversaw the reconstruction of Andy Kerr Stadium, renovation of Starr Rink, Reid Athletic Center and Huntington Gymnasium, construction of Charles H. Sanford Field House, and upgrading of Colgate’s outdoor facilities. Dunlap was also instrumental in Colgate’s membership in the Patriot League.
