Mike Foley was a four-year letterwinner in football and captain of the 1977 team. A three-year starter at center, he was twice honored as an all-East performer by the Associated Press and in 1977 was also named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-East squad. In his senior year, Foley helped Colgate to a school-record 10 wins. In 1981, Foley returned to his alma mater as junior varsity head coach and varsity receiver coach. After two seasons in that position, he took over as offensive line coach in 1983. He added the duties of offensive coordinator in 1984. In 1986, he served as interim head coach during the absence of head coach Fred Dunlap. Following Dunlap’s retirement in 1987, Foley was named head coach of the Raiders (1988-92). After a five-year absence, Foley returned to the campus in 1997 as offensive coordinator and line coach. His return saw the Raiders make four NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances and capture four Patriot League titles.
