Bob Benson began his Colgate swimming and diving coaching career in 1970 as the men’s coach. Ten years later he took the helm as the women’s coach, and he led both programs as head coach through 2000. Benson finished his 31-year Colgate career with a 300-220 record, compiling 186 wins for the men and 114 for the women – both school records. He turned the program into a perennial conference contender, highlighted by 13 consecutive-win seasons including back-to-back 11-win campaigns in 1973-74 and 1974-75. In 20 seasons as the women’s head coach, Benson produced 12 winning seasons and won New York State AIAW crowns in 1981, 1982, and 1985. Before joining the Patriot League, Benson guided 11 Colgate teams to Upper New York State Swimming and Diving Association championships during the 1970s and 1980s. A standout collegiate swimmer at UConn, Benson won the New England Region championships in the 220- and 440-yard freestyle events as team captain. He also competed in the NCAA championships and participated in the 1960 Olympic Trials.
