Nels MacCallum was a standout baseball player for the Red Raiders earning three varsity letters (1949-51). The former captain (1951) was one of the most feared hitters in the country. In his first varsity season he batted .480 and followed that up the next season with a .358 average and selection to the NCAA District II All-East team. In his senior season, the hard-hitting shortstop posted a .350 average and received his second straight selection to the District II All-East team. Upon graduation, he signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers.
