Colgate drops home opener to Rider

Van Kempen active in goal as the Raiders drop their first game

HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Raiders fell 3–0 to the Broncs in their home opener on Tyler's Field as Rider scored in three different quarters to capture its first win of the season.

COACH CORNELL-DEANGELIS' COMMENTS
  • "We had a strong start to the game putting pressure on and earning two immediate corners. Unfortunately after Rider's first goal, we played on our heels and didn't trust ourselves and each other. Our goal is to connect passes and defend more aggressively next game. We know that we are a skilled and talented team, we are focused on building a winning mindset and attitude. We know how to win and we can win and now we move on to the next game to prove it."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders started the game hot with two back-to-back penalty corners. Grace Schmelzinger's shot hit the post and ricocheted while Aheia Dhillon's shot was saved.
  • Rider scored the first goal in the fifth minute when Semra Said rifled the ball in with an insert from Sam Biondi, giving Rider a 1-0 lead.
  • The Broncs had four penalty corner attempts in the second quarter, with Valeria Perales taking three of them.
  • Colgate's goalie Claire Van Kempen recorded four saves during the second quarter.
  • Just shy of the 29th minute, Mackenzie Smith scored a goal, compliments of Ryleigh Damminger to increase the Broncs' lead, 2-0.
  • Van Kempen made two key saves in the third quarter for the Raiders, stopping shots from Martina De Cespedes and Megan Normile.
  • Lauren Widdowson earned a penalty corner opportunity and fired a shot that went high.
  • Rider extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal by Ang Borisow, assisted by Anna Finn in the 47th minute.
  • As time expired, the Raiders could not generate additional chances to get on the board.

GAME NOTES
  • Van Kempen stood her ground in net making eight saves against 11 shots faced.
  • Widdowson and Dhillon ripped two shots, though neither found the back of the net.
  • Elicia Bikhazi-Green, Liza Rogers, and Ava Poliafico made their Raider debut against the Broncs.
