HAMILTON, N.Y. — For the first time since 2004, the Colgate Raiders earned a hard-fought 5–3 win over the Lock Haven Bald Eagles. Forefronting the offense was junior
Morgan Willis; she fired off nine shots with a 100-percent on-goal percentage and tallied four goals for a career best.
COACH CORNELL-DEANGELIS' COMMENTS
"I am incredibly happy about today's win. I know it was important to rebound quickly after Friday. It was an outstanding team effort after we emphasized team first. We were composed and really emphasized make sure we controlled the tempo of the game. I know we are capable of scoring even more goals and drawing corners so that is something we will continue to focus on moving forward."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Raiders had an early opportunity from a breakaway. Dani Palmer played the ball forward into the arc to Willis, who tapped the ball in the back of the net to take a 1–0 lead about six minutes into the game.
- Willis was able to rip one more shot before the first quarter ended, while the Raiders' defense blanked the Bald Eagles from taking any shots in the first quarter.
- Claire Van Kempen recorded a save in the 17th minute as Lock Haven got their first shot attempt of the match.
- Wasting no time, Lauren Widdowson serviced the ball into the crease and found Willis with an open look, who sealed goal number two for the Raiders.
- The Bald Eagles were awarded a penalty corner in the 25th minute. Melanie Beall was able to net the first goal of the season for her team with an assist from Madison Friend.
- Colgate, staying aggressive, was awarded a penalty stroke after a Lock Haven shove from behind. Abby Williams stepped up in the moment and netted goal number three to take a 3–1 lead going into the half.
- Van Kempen made two necessary saves in the third to help keep the cushion for the Raiders.
- Lock Haven's Beall scored her second goal of the season in the 37th minute, reducing the Bald Eagles' deficit, 3–2.
- Willis, with the hot hand, responded with a solo goal attempt. Notching a hat trick, she dribbled along the endline and netted it to take the 4–2 advantage.
- Still giving chase, Lock Haven's Kendall Siegle scored her first goal of the season and cut the score back to a one-goal game, 4–3.
- Van Kempen made two more saves to blank Lock Haven in the final quarter.
- In the 51st minute, Willis helped seal the Bald Eagles' fate scoring her fourth goal of the game to push the Raiders back into a two-goal cushion.
- Willis placed four more shots on goal to close out the fourth but helped Colgate prevail 5–3.
