Cardiac Colgate Steals Win Over Clarkson

Murphy’s magic leads to late-game heroics in overtime victory

HAMILTON— A career-high 55 saves from senior goalie Hannah Murphy set the stage for a game-tying goal from junior Alexis Petford with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, and sophomore Kaia Malachino drilled the game-winner in overtime to push No. 4 Colgate past No. 9 Clarkson on the team's annual Autism & Neurodiversity Awareness game.

"Hannah Murphy gave us an opportunity to win tonight," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "Credit to Clarkson, they came in with a firm game plan and asserted it onto us, but Hannah stood tall. This group has so much resolve and resilience, and we get contributions up and down the lineup, but it starts with our captain and our leader, Hannah Murphy, demonstrating such poise under pressure."

"The fight in our team to come back late in the third is unbelievable," Murphy said. "It was so awesome, especially to get the win in front of our friends from Pathfinder Village. They always bring a lot of energy and they really helped us come back to get the win."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite a buzzing Clarkson first-period power play that saw nine shots on goal, Colgate kept the outing scoreless with 22 first-period saves from Murphy.
  • Murphy added another 22 saves in the second stanza, but conceded the first score of the night after Colgate could not kill off a five-on-three penalty.
  • The Golden Knights continued to dominate possession time deep into the third, but when Murphy vacated her net the Raiders capitalized on the extra-skater thanks to Petford's 10th goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • Junior Sara Stewart won a puck battle deep in Colgate's defensive zone three minutes into overtime, setting the stage for senior Neena Brick to collect her second assist of the night on a long stretch pass to Malachino.
  • The sophomore calmly converted on the breakaway, depositing the game-winner past the outstretched leg pad of Clarkson's netminder to secure Colgate's season sweep of the Golden Knights.

GAME NOTES
  • Murphy becomes just the fifth Raider in program history to record 50+ saves in an outing, and her 55 stops are tied for the ninth-highest single-game save count ever by a Raider. Her 55 saves are the most ever recorded by a Colgate netminder in a winning effort.
  • Brick tallied her 100th career point with a pair of assists in the win, becoming just the 21st Raider in program history to accomplish the feat.
  • Malachino stretched her point streak to a team-high three games where she has racked up three tallies.
