Biederman Buries OT Winner in 3-2 Triumph

#4 Colgate bests #7 St. Lawrence in second-straight OT victory

HAMILTON Junior Elyssa Biederman's first game-winning goal of the season came in overtime to help No. 4 Colgate defeat No. 7 St. Lawrence, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon inside the Class of 1965 Arena.

The Raiders would come back from an early 1-0 deficit thanks to power-play goals by sophomore Emma Pais and junior Sara Stewart. Senior goalie Hannah Murphy added 30 saves in the win.

"We're happy to come out of this weekend with two wins," head coach Stefan Decosse said. "We showed a lot of resolve and resilience this weekend, but we haven't arrived and there's much for us to continue to learn. All in all, I'm just so proud of our effort and the way we stuck together in tough times to come through with two wins."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Saints would strike first with 5:31 left in the first period as Murphy was unable to stop a rebounded puck off her leg pad.
  • Colgate struck back with a power-play goal with less than two minutes left in the first period as a series of passes from Biederman to sophomore Kaia Malachino put Pais directly in front of the net for a shot that went past the goalie's right side blocker.
  • The second would start hot for Colgate as moments into the period the Raiders went on their second power play of the night. Junior Alexis Petford dished a pass to sophomore Madeline Palumbo who would shoot into traffic, allowing Stewart to redirect it into the net for a 2-1 lead.
  • St. Lawrence would tie it up at 2-2 seven minutes into the third period off a breakaway.
  • After Biederman caused a turnover at the top of the Colgate defensive zone, she would go on to net the game-winner just 30 seconds into overtime to win the game for the Raiders, 3-2.

GAME NOTES
  • Murphy moves into a tie for the most wins in a season by a Raider netminder with 20 victories so far in 2024-25 (Julia Vandyk 2016-2017, Kayle Osborne 2023-24).
  • With 664 saves, Murphy remains sixth in the country for saves and third for highest win total (20).
  • Malachino continues her point streak to a team-high four games where she has racked up four tallies.
  • With two power-play goals, the Raiders now have the second-most in all of NCAA's Division I with 30.
  • Pais is now tied for second in the country with seven power-play goals this season.
  • Biederman's multipoint night is her 15th of the season.
