SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — After falling behind three, Colgate cut Union's lead to one in the third but could not complete the comeback, dropping a 5-3 decision on the road Friday evening.
"Ninety eight seconds hurt us today. Otherwise we outplayed and out-chanced our opponent. We believe fully completely in our process and will look to rebound tomorrow," said head coach Mike Harder.
The Raiders found the back of the net twice in 15 seconds in the third period to make it a 4-3 game.
Bobby Metz made it 4-2 at the 15:31 mark when he flung a quick wrister from the left faceoff circle off of a feed from
Ryan McGuire that hit the right post and went in.
Ben Raymond also picked up a helper on the play.
Just seconds later, the Raiders made it a one-goal game with a goal from
Ross Mitton.
Simon Labelle picked up a loose puck and played it to
Alex DiPaolo, who passed from the corner to Mitton for a one-timer right in front.
Union regained a two-goal lead after putting in an empty-netter with 1:01 left.
The Garnett Chargers had pulled ahead 4-1 just under five minutes into the middle frame with a power play tally from Liam Robertson, his second of the contest.
Colgate got awarded a penalty shot with eight and a half minutes left in the second, but Raymond put it off target. The Raiders held a 16-8 lead in shots in the period but could not get one past a hot Garnet Charger netminder. Colgate finished the game with a 35-27 advantage.
Union scored three goals in 98 seconds during the first to take a 3-1 lead. Robertson found the back of the net with his first power-play goal at the 13:30 mark. Carter Korpi followed 14 seconds later. Nate Hanley then scored a minute and 24 seconds after, giving his squad a two-goal advantage.
Jake Schneider put Colgate up 1-0 just over four minutes into the first with his eighth goal of the season. The first-year intercepted a Garnet Charger pass right in front after it was tapped by
Ethan Manderville and skated in before burying a shot inside the far-side post.
Colgate had its first power play chance of the contest at the end of the first, and it spilled into the second, but the Raiders could not get anything going.
Carter Gylander stopped 22 shots in net for the Raiders.
