TROY, N.Y. — Colgate picked up an extra point in the league standings Saturday evening after tying RPI 5-5 but taking the shootout 2-1 at Houston Field House.
"That was a great shootout win for us in front of a sellout crowd. It is not easy to win on the road, but we are happy with the result," said head coach Mike Harder.
Simon Labelle tallied four assists in the game, becoming the first Colgate player to do so since Jake Kulevich in February 2016. Colgate also saw multi-point performances from
Ross Mitton (two goals) and
Ryan McGuire (two assists).
Carter Gylander made a season-high 43 saves in the game. He came out hot, logging 10 saves in the first and 16 in the second. The senior also stopped seven shots in overtime.
Labelle notched the shootout winner, and
Jake Schneider also found the back of the net. Neither side could put one in during the overtime period despite some back-and-forth chances early.
The Engineers knotted the score at 5-5 with 2:10 left in the third when Tyler Hotson scored an extra attacker goal.
Ethan Manderville had given Colgate a 5-4 advantage when he scored on a power play with 12:45 remaining in the third.
Tommy Bergsland played the puck across the ice to Labelle, who made a short pass to the fifth-year, who finished off a shot from right in front.
RPI scored three power play goals in the middle frame to erase two Raider leads, including a two-goal advantage.
Max Smolinski tied the game at 4-4 with a man-up tally with 50 seconds left. It came after
Robby Newton gave Colgate a 4-3 lead two minutes earlier. The sophomore buried one home off of passes from
Ryan Sullivan and
Levi Glasman. Rensselaer opened the period scoring two straight, with Jimmy Goffredo and Jake Gagnon scoring 40 seconds apart.
Colgate took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission, with Mitton scoring two of the Raiders' goals. The senior got Colgate on the board after Labelle played a centering pass that he finished home just four and a half minutes in.
After the Engineers equalized at 1-1, the Raiders ended the period with two in a row.
Daniel Panetta found the back of the net off passes from Labelle and McGuire then Mitton notched his second to give his squad a two-goal advantage with 1:07 remaining.
