ORONO, Maine — Colgate and No. 7/8 Maine played to a 4-4 tie Saturday evening after neither side could find the back of the net in overtime.
"Certainly frustrating coming out with a tie after having several paths to victory. Our group can, however, take some solace in knowing we are right there in taking a bite out of the No. 1 Pairwise ranked team in the nation," said head coach Mike Harder.
Brett Chorske put together a three-point performance with two goals and an assist. It marked his third three-point performance this season and the second two-goal game of his career.
Ryan McGuire also logged his second three-point game of the season with a goal and two helpers. He also held his own in the faceoff circle, going 21-of-31. As a team, the Raiders went 49-of-81.
Carter Gylander made a season-high 41 saves. He stopped 16 shots in the first and 12 in the third. The senior also made some big saves in the extra period to prevent a Black Bear game-winner.
Maine scored with 2:23 left in the third to knot the score up at 4-4 and send it into overtime.
Earlier in the third, Chorske had put the Raiders up 4-3 with his second goal just under four minutes into the final frame. He ripped one in from the right faceoff circle off passes from
Simon Labelle and McGuire.
Neither team could prevail in overtime. Chorske scored what he thought was the OT-winner with 2:21 left off a rebound following a breakaway, but it got called for goaltender interference. The game then went into a shootout for bragging rights, which Maine took 2-0.
Colgate got off to a hot start, scoring three times in the opening period. Chorkse netted his first goal just 59 seconds into the game.
Pierson Brandon played a pass to McGuire, who dished it to Chorske. The junior skated in and fired a shot past the Black Bears' goalie.
After extending his point streak to nine games with the assist, McGuire scored for the fourth straight contest to make it 2-0 Raiders. Chorske passed across the ice to McGuire, who ripped one in from a tight angle on the right wing.
Just over two minutes later,
Daniel Panetta made it 3-0 with a power play tally.
Reid Irwin played the puck to Labelle, who skated in before playing it back to Panetta for a one-timer he put home from the left faceoff circle.
Just over 20 seconds later, Maine answered after Donavan Villeneuve-Houle scored the first of three straight Maine goals.
The majority of the second period was a defensive battle, with neither side giving in. The Black Bears struck twice in the final minute to tie it up at 3-3.
