ITHACA, N.Y. — Reid Irwin's third-period goal put Colgate ahead and led the team to a 4-2 victory over No. 16 Cornell at Lynah Rink Saturday evening.
"I am happy for our guys - it was a well-deserved team win tonight," said head coach Mike Harder.
The Raiders had a pair of three-point performances from
Brett Chorske and
Jake Schneider, who both tallied a goal and two assists. For Schneider, it marked the first multi-point performance of his career, and it was Chorske's second three-point game this season.
Irwin put Colgate ahead 3-2 just over a minute into the third.
Alex DiPaolo played a pass in front of the goal from behind the net that
Ross Mitton reached out and got his stick on, hitting it off the goalie's pads. The rebound bounced to Irwin, who fired a shot from the left faceoff circle.
Ryan McGuire sealed the deal, scoring an empty net goal with 15 seconds left to make it 4-2. Chorske and Schneider picked up their second assists on the play.
In the second, after Ryan Walsh drew Cornell even at 1-1 2:41 into the period, Chorske regained the lead for the Raiders less than nine minutes later.
Ryan Sullivan received a pass from Schneider, who took it down the ice, before tapping it backward to Chorske, who released a ripper into the top right corner.
Just a minute and 26 seconds later, Cornell got awarded a penalty shot after getting taken down on a breakaway. Sullivan Mack converted to make it a 2-2 game
Schneider broke open the scoring with a minute and 20 seconds left in the first, giving Colgate a 1-0 lead. Chorske passed to
Simon Labelle, who tapped the puck to Schneider. The first-year slid a shot five-hole past the goalie to make it 1-0.
Carter Gylander was solid in goal for the Raiders, making 24 saves. The senior held Cornell scoreless in the first period with 13 saves, stopping some early chances. Gylander did the same in the third, tallying six saves to secure the win.
The Raiders' PK unit went a perfect four-for-four on the night. It got its biggest kill with 4:48 left in the third, preventing a potential chance for the Big Red to equalize.
