FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Six different Raiders scored in a 6-1 defeat of Sacred Heart Saturday evening. The win gave Colgate a series sweep of the Pioneers after also picking up a victory Friday.
"The only thing better than winning on Colgate Day is doing it again the next day. Happy for both men's and women's hockey this weekend," said head coach Mike Harder.
Junior
Ben Raymond led the way for Colgate with three points, all coming off assists. It marks the first three-point game of his career. Fellow juniors
Tommy Bergsland (2A) and
Ryan McGuire (1G, 1A) registered two-point performances. Sophomore
Sebastian Tamburro also notched a goal and an assist.
Senior captain
Pierson Brandon scored for the second-straight game to put the Raiders ahead 1-0 over halfway through the first. Bergsland and Raymond assisted the goal.
The Pioneers knotted the score up at 1-1 a minute and a half into the second with a goal from Kevin Lombardi.
It was all Raiders from there, with Colgate scoring five unanswered to end the game. At the 12:07 mark of the second, McGuire finished off a shot from in front of the goal to make it 2-1 with assists from Tamburro and Raymond.
Ross Mitton pushed Colgate's lead to two at 3-1 with 56 seconds left in the middle frame. A loose puck in front of the goal came off the sticks of
Ryan Sullivan and
Brett Chorske. Mitton managed to find it and tap it in.
The Raiders tallied three goals in the final period. Tamburro found the back of the net two and a half minutes in off a feed from Raymond, making the scoreboard 4-1.
First-year
Jake Schneider got in on the action 11 minutes later, notching his first career goal. He flipped a backhand shot top shelf off of passes from
Levi Glasman and
Nick Anderson, extending Colgate's advantage to four.
Bobby Metz topped off the scoring with a power play goal with under a minute to play. The defenseman fired a shot outside the right faceoff circle for the Raiders' sixth goal. It was the first of the sophomore's career.
The Pioneers got off to a strong start, firing 11 shots in the opening period, but
Carter Gylander stood tall in net, stopping all of them. He finished with 22 saves in the game.
Colgate also shut down three Pioneer power play chances to prevent them from getting back in the game. The Raiders put up 40-plus shots for the second-straight game, outshooting SHU 44-23.
