Harvard Snaps Colgate's Win Streak In Overtime Defeat

Alex Young Scores Twice, but the Raiders Fall 5-4 in OT

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — A two-goal performance from Alex Young was not enough as Colgate dropped a 5-4 overtime loss to #10 Harvard Friday evening in Cambridge. The loss snapped the Raiders' three-game win streak.

Matthew Coronato scored the overtime game-winner off a pass from Henry Thrun with 1:15 remaining to secure the victory.

Young scored the game's first goal seven and a half minutes into the first. The junior intercepted a Crimson pass before skating down the right side of the ice and flicking a shot off the left post that went into the goal.

Four minutes later, Ross Mitton doubled the Raiders' lead. Matt Verboon dished the puck to Mitton, who skated in and slid a shot under the pads of Harvard's goalie to make it 2-0.

Alex Laferriere scored two-straight goals at the end of the first to tie the game up at 2-2. His first came at the 12:22 mark when Laferriere fired a shot into the back of the net off of a pass from John Farinacci. Laferriere netted his second goal of the game with 1:13 remaining, with Joe Miller and Thrun picking up assists.

The Raiders came out firing in the second with two goals in the first five minutes of the period, beginning with Ryan McGuire scoring at the 4:29 mark. Ethan Manderville passed to Levi Glasman, who fired a shot that got saved. McGuire picked up the rebound and finished off a shot as he put Colgate ahead 3-2.

Alex Young notched his second of the game 45 seconds later to extend the Raiders' lead back to two at 4-2. After a scrum along the boards, Colton Young tapped the puck to Simon Labelle, who played a pass out to Young for a shot he slammed home.

Harvard netted two goals in the third period to tie the game back up at 4-4. Zakary Karpa scored two minutes into the period to make it a one-goal game. Colgate nearly held on for the win before Thrun scored with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Carter Gylander recorded his ninth 30-plus save game of the season in goal, making 32 stops. He logged double-digit saves in both the second and third periods.

Colgate had two penalties in the game, both of which came in the third period that it successfully killed off.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"That was a heck of a game. Of course, it stings to lose like that but I really liked a lot of what we did tonight. We made a couple of mistakes and against a team with that much skill they will hurt you. The game-tying goal was just a bit of bad luck. It deflected off a skate and went top corner. Harvard is certainly not a team you want to play three-on-three overtime against. Their speed and skill make them very dangerous. Overall, our effort and energy were great. In the end that might end up being a big point. We need to reset and get ready for another tough one tomorrow."
