HAMILTON — It was a win for the ages.
Colgate defeated No. 1 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac 3-2 Saturday, thanks to
Ben Raymond's game-winner in the third period.
After falling behind, Colgate erased a two-goal deficit as it scored a pair of goals in the third period and held on. The victory also marked the Raiders' ninth-straight home game without a loss, as they have not lost in the Class of 1965 Arena since Oct. 28.
Raymond scored the game-winner with just over ten minutes remaining in the final period.
Nick Anderson played a pass behind the net to
Nic Belpedio, who flopped the puck up the ice ahead of Raymond. The sophomore collected it and fought off a Quinnipiac defender before tapping a shot into the lower left corner to give Colgate a 3-2 lead.
Carter Gylander made 22 saves on the night. The junior stood tall in the final three and a half minutes of the game, after the Bobcats pulled their goalie and fired shot after shot at him. The Raiders also had several blocked shots during that time as they squandered Quinnipiac's chance of equalizing.
Six and a half minutes into the third,
Ryan McGuire tied the game up at 2-2.
Ross Mitton dished a pass to
Levi Glasman, who played the puck to McGuire as he fired a shot that got saved by the goalie. The sophomore collected his own rebound and slotted a shot into the back of the net to knot the game up.
In the second,
Ethan Manderville got Colgate on the board when he scored halfway through the middle frame. The goal came after the Bobcats got called for a pair of penalties, giving the Raiders a five-on-three advantage. Anderson passed to
Alex Young, who sent the puck toward the net, as Manderville deflected it into the goal.
Quinnipiac scored the game's first goal on a power play just under 13 minutes into the first period. Zach Metsa passed to Sam Lipkin, who dished the puck to Colin Graf for a shot he finished off to put the Bobcats ahead. Quinnipiac then doubled its lead with an early goal in the second period. Christopher Fillion found the back of the net off of passes from Lipkin and Zach Metsa.
The Raiders had two other power play opportunities in the first period that they could not take advantage of. Colgate also had four shots hit the pipe in the opening period, barely missing on a few chances to take an early lead.

Head Coach Don Vaughan
"When I looked around our room after this game there were a lot of exhausted guys sitting there. That's what you are supposed to feel like after a game like that. Quinnipiac is one of the best teams in the country and it takes the kind of effort we had tonight to beat that team. From Carter on we had a lot of second and third efforts. We could have easily had a letdown after hitting four pipes in the first and then falling behind. We had a game plan and stuck to it. I'm proud of our guys. It's a great win for our group."
