Raiders Shut Out Tigers

Carter Gylander Makes 19 Saves in 5-0 Victory

HAMILTON — Colgate scored three goals in the third period en route to a 5-0 victory over Princeton at the Class of 1965 Arena Friday.

Carter Gylander made 19 saves, picking up his first shutout in his 11th win of the year. Daniel Panetta and Matt Verboon led Colgate with two points each after both tallied a goal and an assist.

Colgate improved to 8-3 in ECAC Hockey, marking its best start through 11 games in conference play since the 2014-15 season.

The Raiders struck on their second power play chance in the first to take a 1-0 lead with just under a minute and a half remaining. A series of tic-tac-toe passes from Ross Mitton to Simon Labelle led to a one-time shot for Alex DiPaolo that he finished off.

Both sides picked up penalty kills early on in the second. The Raiders killed off a Princeton power play after Ethan Manderville got sent to the box.Colgate could not capitalize on a power play chance of its own with 12:48 remaining.

Panetta doubled the Raiders' lead when he scored his second goal of the season with just over three and a half minutes left in the middle frame. Verboon fired a shot that was saved by the goalie and deflected out to Tommy Bergsland, who played a pass in front of the goal that Panetta fired into the net.

Gylander made eight stops in each of the first two periods, denying Princeton several scoring chances, including power play opportunities.

Levi Glasman made it a three-goal game at the 1:19 mark of the third. Ryan McGuire stole the puck from a Princeton player before tapping it to Glasman. The junior got free on a breakaway and slotted a shot past the Tigers' goalie.

Verboon then scored a power play goal with just over eight minutes left to make it a four-goal game. Alex Young and Manderville picked up assists on the play.

Pierson Brandon topped off the scoring when he netted one with 4:21 remaining in the game. Ben Raymond tapped the puck to Panetta, who skated down the ice and fired a shot that got saved, but it deflected to Brandon, who tapped it in easily off the rebound.

The Raiders outshot the Tigers 36-19 in the victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"We had some great contributions up and down our lineup tonight. Princeton played so hard and as a result, we had to defend for longer periods than I would prefer. In the end, we made the plays we needed to make especially on special teams. We will enjoy this win tonight and get ready for one of the best teams in the country in here tomorrow."

UP NEXT
The Raiders are back in action Saturday evening when they welcome the top-ranked team in the country, the Quinnipiac Bobcats, to the Class of 1965 Arena. Opening puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
