Colgate Earns Extra Point in Shootout Win Over Cornell

Raiders Erase Two-Goal Deficit in Second with Goals from Alex Young and Jeff Stewart

ITHACA, N.Y.— Colgate erased Cornell's two-goal lead in the second period to tie the game, before taking the extra point in the league standings with a 2-0 shootout win on Saturday.

The Big Red opened the scoring early in the first, as just over four minutes in, Jack Malone scored on a power play to make it 1-0.

The Raiders held Cornell scoreless on the man-advantage for the remainder of the night, shutting down the Big Red on five additional chances.

With 12:13 left in the first and the Raiders on a power play, Nick Anderson passed to Alex Young who one-timed a shot into the bottom right side of the goal to cut the lead back to one. Matt
Verboon picked up a secondary assist on the play.

The Raiders then tied the game up with two minutes remaining in the period. Alex Young tapped the puck to Anderson who passed across the ice to Jeff Stewart who ripped a one-time shot from the right faceoff circle into the bottom left side of the goal.

At the end of the third, Tommy Bergsland was sent to the box for holding but Colgate picked up a key penalty kill in the final 1:45 of regulation and the first 15 seconds of overtime to keep the Big Red from scoring a potential game-winning goal.

Both sides had some quality chances during the extra period, but neither was able to pull ahead as the game went to a shootout.

Both teams' first attempts were saved. In the second round, Alex Young deked out Cornell's goalie and placed a shot into the lower right side of the goal to put the Raiders ahead. Benson then once again denied the Big Red. Josh McKechney secured the extra point for the Raiders in the third round when he swooped out wide to the left and then came back in and beat the goalie on a shot to the short side.

Cornell ended with the advantage in shots at 34-24.

Benson made 32 saves in goal for the Raiders.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"Just a great college hockey weekend. Both teams put it all on the line. I'm very proud of our guys. I have said before that we have played well but the results just have not matched the effort. Special teams and goaltending have been the difference in these past few games. It's hard to win in this league. Every game is war. We will do what we always do. Enjoy the ride home, hit the reset button tomorrow, then get back to work on Monday and get ready for three games in four days next weekend. Onward."

UP NEXT
