Young Delivers in Overtime

Colton Young Nets Game-Winner in 3-2 Victory Over Brown

HAMILTON — Colton Young scored the overtime game-winner to give Colgate a 3-2 win over Brown Friday at the Class of 1965 Arena.

The goal came three and a half minutes into the extra period and was Young's first game-winner of the season and the sixth of his career.

Owen Neuharth and Reid Irwin each recorded their first point as a Raider in the victory with an assist apiece.

Matt Verboon got Colgate on the board when he scored six and a half minutes into the game. Nic Belpedio passed to Alex DiPaolo, who found Verboon in the center of the ice for a shot he slammed into the back of the net to put Colgate up 1-0.

The Raiders had another opportunity when they earned their first power play of the night 7:45 into the game when the Bears got called for interference, but they could not capitalize.

In the second, Colgate got called for a pair of simultaneous penalties, with Pierson Brandon getting hit for boarding and Colton Young getting sent to the box for holding. The Bears took advantage of the five-on-three as Ryan Bottrill fired a shot into the goal to tie the game up at 1-1.

Brown struck again with just over four minutes remaining in the middle frame when Bradley Cocca scored off passes from Jackson Munro and Matt Sutton to put the Bears ahead 2-1.

Colgate had another power play opportunity in the third that it could not score on despite some good looks at goal.

Ben Raymond tied the game back up at 2-2 when he scored just under nine and a half minutes into the final period. Belpedio played the puck to Neuharth before he dished it to Raymond. The sophomore spun around a defender and continued to skate before getting free in the slot and burying a shot.

Colgate's PK unit came up big in the third, picking up a kill on a five-minute major with six minutes remaining in the game.

The Raiders had one final chance in regulation when Ethan Manderville hit a shot off the post with 13 seconds left.

After much back-and-forth play, Young delivered the game-winner with three and a half minutes remaining. Irwin passed ahead to DiPaolo, who skated toward the center of the ice before dishing the puck off to Young. The senior skated in, going one-on-one with the goalie. He then tried a backhand shot that got stopped, but the puck came loose and slid into the net to give Colgate the victory.

The Raiders fired a season-high 45 shots in the game, outshooting  Brown, who put just 22 shots on net.

In goal, Carter Gylander recorded 22 saves as he earned his fifth victory of the season.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"Brown played a good road game. They took advantage of a couple of opportunities and forced us to really grind to get even. Our penalty killers were great again tonight. Chris Azzano has done a remarkable job with that group. We had several grade A scoring chances, but their goalie was very good tonight. I was pleased with our overall effort. It's hard to score in this league. We could have been easily frustrated, but the guys stuck with it and found a way to win it in overtime."
