Colgate Skates to First Tie of the Season at Yale

Goals by Griffin Lunn and Arnaud Vachon help the Raiders earn a point

NEW HAVEN, Conn.Colgate and Yale skated to a 2-2 tie on Sunday night at Ingalls Rink.

Neither the Raiders (8-12-1, 3-5-1 ECAC Hockey) nor the Bulldogs (3-10-1, 2-7-1 ECAC Hockey) scored in the third period or the three-on-three overtime period. Yale did, however, earn an extra point in the ECAC Hockey standings by outscoring Colgate 2-0 in the shootout.

The tie snapped Colgate's five-game losing streak and ended Yale's streak of three straight losses.

Yale struck first with a goal off the stick of Justin Pearson seven minutes into the opening period. Colgate tied it up at the 12 minute mark of the first period on Griffin Lunn's fifth goal of the season. Lunn's goal was assisted by Alex Young and Nic Belpedio

The Bulldogs took the lead again on Ian Carpentier's goal 5:31 into the second period. The Raiders tied it when Arnaud Vachon scored from in front of the net on a pass from Elliott McDermott. Alex Young picked up his second assist of the night on the goal. Vachon's third goal of the season came at the 12:44 mark of the second period.

Colgate outshot Yale 61-49 with 35 of those shots going on goal. Mitch Benson recorded 28 saves in net for the Raiders that included 11 saves in the third period and overtime.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"Both teams played hard tonight. We created enough offensive opportunities to win the game and we just didn't finish. We only had one power play opportunity tonight and we scored just as it expired so if we had a couple more maybe things would have been different. I like how we battled. I know this group will keep grinding. We are expecting a regular weekend next week with both Quinnipiac and Princeton ready to play so it's back to work as we prepare for one of the best teams in the country coming to '65 on Friday."
