Win Streak Stops at Cornell

Liz Auby Makes 35 Saves in 2-0 Loss

ITHACA, N.Y. - Something had to give on Friday afternoon in Ithaca. Colgate came in having rolled through its past four opponents; Cornell was on a tear of its own since tying Union on Jan. 10, outscoring opponents 14-1.

In a matchup of two of the nation's top three penalty kill units, goals would be tough to come by. The stellar PK units were in full force early on. Just seconds after killing its first penalty of the day, Colgate surrendered a goal to Cornell's Paige Lewis.

Liz Auby made 12 saves in the opening period to limit the damage in a fairly one-sided start.

The second period didn't bode much differently for the visitors. Outshot 18-7, Cornell eventually found the back of the net once more. Colgate went to the locker room for the final intermission searching for answers on both sides of the ice.

Early on in the third, the Raiders came close to striking. Sammy Smigliani stole the puck and had a break away chance, but Big Red goalie Lindsay Browning wouldn't let anything through.

This became a common theme on Friday afternoon. The nation's leader in goals against average and winning percentage earned her seventh shutout of the year to put a brief halt to Colgate's winning ways.

Cornell picked up two points to pad its ECAC lead and improve to 17-1-2 on the season. The Raiders fall to 13-10-4.

Bottom Line

  • Cornell 2, Colgate 0

From the Source

Head Coach Greg Fargo on Colgate's penalty kill

  • "You hate to take as many penalties as we did but our PK group did a great job tonight. We were really connected on the PK all night."

Looking back on today and ahead to tomorrow

  • "I give Cornell a lot of credit today. They came out hard and with a lot of speed and we were caught by surprise, early on especially. They set the tone in the game today. There are some aspects of our own game that we know we want to be better in and tomorrow's game will be a great opportunity for us to learn and make progress with that."
