Cornell Defeats Colgate, 2-1

Ithaca, N.Y.-  The Colgate women's ice hockey team opened up the weekend's ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals at #7 Cornell University with a close 2-1 loss in Lynah Rink this afternoon.

The first period was fast paced and saw Colgate outshoot Cornell, 9-6.

The Raider offense put pressure on netminder Paula Voorheis throughout the entire first frame, while Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ont.) made several key stops to keep the game knotted at 0-0 by the time intermission came around.

Olivia Zafuto (Niagara Falls, N.Y) scored her seventh goal of the season to put the Raiders up 1-0 just over three minutes into the second period. Zafuto took a hard shot from the point, while Shannon Ormel (Winnipeg, Man.) screened Voorheis and the puck sailed over the goalie's left shoulder. Breanne Wilson-Bennett (Markham, Ont.) and Bailey Larson (Sycamore, Ill.) were credited with the assists on the play.

The Big Red responded six minutes later with a tally from Diana Buckley to tie it up at 1-1.

With the score tied, both teams came out in the third period looking for the go ahead goal. Cornell took the 2-1 lead on a penalty shot with 4:24 remaining in regulation.

The Raiders continued to fight and were on the doorstep to scoring the equalizer as time wound down on a scrum in front of the Cornell net but Voorheis was able to keep the puck from crossing the goal line to give her team the victory.  

Netminder Vandyk made 22 stops between the pipes for Colgate, while Voorheis recorded 31 saves.
