ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) scored two goals Friday night for the nationally ranked No. 7/7 Colgate women's ice hockey team but it was not enough as the Raiders fell to the St. Cloud State Huskies, 7-4, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Labbe's two-goal game was her second multiple-goal game of the season and fourth multiple-point game.
Megan Sullivan (Toronto, Ontario) had a goal and an assist to pick up her for her third multiple-point game of the season.
Nine different players recorded points Raiders in their first game in the state of Minnesota since the 2012-13 season.
In a back-and-forth affair, the Raiders and Huskies changed leads four times and were tied up four times with St. Cloud State scoring the final four goals of the game.
The Raiders claimed a 1-0 lead midway through the first period as Sullivan buried her own rebound. Play started on a breakout with
Anonda Hoppner (Carp, Ontario) feeding the puck to
Shannon Ormel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) who found Sullivan with a quick pass. Sullivan skated up the right wing where she backhanded a shot that was saved by St. Cloud State goaltender Taylor Crosby and banged home the rebound.
St. Cloud State evened up the scored 56 seconds later as Lauren Hespenheide picked up her third goal of the season. Brittney Anderson fired a shot from the left wing that was saved by Colgate goaltender
Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ontario) but the rebound went to the slot. Hespenheide's whiffed on the first shot attempt before squeaking one through Vandyk's five-hole.
Labbe reclaimed the lead for the Raiders with just 2:47 left in the first period.
Meghan Brennan (Ottawa, Ontario) played the puck from center ice to
Bailey Larson (Sycamore, Illinois) on the right wing as she skated into the neutral zone. Larson fired a shot from the right faceoff dot that perfectly caromed off Crosby's pads to Labbe on the back door for the one-timer.
Hannah Potrykus scored a pair of goals to open up the second period, including one that came just 51 seconds into the period for the Huskies. Potrykus' second goal with 11:51 left in the period gave them a 3-2 lead.
Labbe added her second goal of the game with 10:13 to play in the second period with a fantastic individual effort. After getting a pass from Sullivan, Labbe knifed her way through traffic in the offensive zone and wristed a shot past Crosby to tie the game, 3-3.
Just over a minute later,
Annika Zalewski (New Hartford, New York) gave the Raiders a 4-3 lead with 9:05 to play in the third period.
Olivia Zafuto (Niagara Falls, New York) collected a clear attempt by the Huskies and fed Zalewski a pass in the neutral zone where she skated the puck into the offensive zone and slid the puck across the ice past Crosby's left pad for the goal.
The Huskies answered back with four unanswered goals over the final 21:54 of the game to claim the 7-4 win. Potrykus completed her first career hat trick with 1:25 left in the third period on the Huskies' final goal of the game.
