HAMILTON – For the second consecutive game, the Colgate men's ice hockey team attempted to comeback from a two-goal, third period deficit but came up short once again in a 3-2 loss to the Cornell Big Red in front of 2,061 fans at Class of 1965 Arena.
Adam Dauda (Kitchener, Ontario) led the Raiders with his fourth two-point game of the season as he tallied the first goal of the game and assisted the Raiders' third period goal.
After Cornell took a 3-1 lead with two goals in the first 7:26 of the third period, the Raiders started to mount pressure. Colgate scored with 8:17 left in the third period to cut the deficit to one goal as
Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta) netted his third goal of the season. McMann gathered a rebound in the right faceoff circle and touched a pass to Dauda who sent the puck along the boards to
Jared Cockrell (Byfield, Massachusetts) below the end line. Cockrell gathered the puck and backhanded a pass to McMann in the slot where he buried the shot past Cornell goaltender Mitch Gillam.
Colgate initially took a 1-0 lead with 11:47 left in the first period on Dauda's fourth goal of the season. Dauda picked off a pass on the forecheck from a Cornell defenseman on the forecheck and fed
John Snodgrass (Eagan, Minnesota) with a pass. Snodgrass tried to deke Gillam but he made the outstretched pad save. Dauda crashed the goal for the rebound, burying the puck that slid under Gillam's pad.
The Big Red tied the game with 5:29 left in the first period after Cornell got a four-on-three power play. Eric Freschi won the faceoff in the offensive end to Patrick McCarron before Mitch Vanderlaan gathered it in the left corner. He worked the puck back to McCarron who skated it from the left point to the high slot and fired the puck past Colgate goaltender
Charlie Finn (North Vancouver, British Columbia).
Both teams went scoreless in the second period, but Colgate was able to register eight shots on goal to keep momentum with the squad.
Cornell broke the 1-1 tie with 14:40 left in the second period on McCarron's second power-play goal of the game. Eric Freschi fired a shot from the right point that was saved by Finn but Vanderlaan collected the rebound and also had a shot saved. McCarron crashed the boards and put home the rebound past Finn.
Freschi put home his own goal 2:06 after the second goal to give Cornell a 3-1 lead. A Raiders' shot was knocked down in the offensive zone and the Big Red went on the counter attack as Jake Weidner skated with speed after collecting a pass. He worked the puck up to Jeff Malott who baited the defender before backhanding a centering feed for Freschi who tucked the puck just past a sprawling Finn.
The Raiders could not muster another goal late in the third period after McMann's goal that made it 3-2. The Raiders tied the Big Red in shots, 8-8, in the final frame of the game.
