Box Score MEN'S ICE HOCKEY FALLS IN THRILLER AT ARIZONA STATE, 5-4
Â
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Colgate men's ice hockey team fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils, 5-4, in a wild, high scoring affair Friday night at Oceanside Ice Arena.
Â
It was a chaotic third period in Tempe as the teams combined for four goals and the Raiders nearly tied the game in the final minute with numerous shots that were stopped by Arizona State goaltender Ryland Pashovitz.
Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta) had a shot saved just before the final horn that would have been a late equalizer.
Â
Tim Harrison (Duxbury, Massachusetts) tied the game, 3-3, just 4:21 into the third to start off the wild final stanza. Harrison picked off a pass in the defensive zone and started a quick Colgate counter attack. He skated across the neutral zone and came in on Pashovitz on the right side before backhanding the shot top shelf.
Â
Arizona State answered Colgate with a pair of goals within 38 seconds of each other midway through the third period to take a 5-3 lead. Louie Rowe tallied his second goal of the game after taking the puck from the end line across the crease and past Finn before Brinson Pasichnuk rifled a shot just off the inside of the left post for the Sun Devils' second power-play goal of the game.
Â
Just under four minutes after Pasichnuk's goal,
Jake Kulevich (Marblehead, Massachusetts) brought the Raiders' back within a goal to make it 5-4.
Mike Panowyk (Whitby, Ontario) worked the puck to
Willie Brooks (Locust, New Jersey) from the boards to center ice. Brooks eventually found Kulevich on the back door who blasted the puck past Pashovitz.
Â
Kulevich and Harrison each recorded a goal and an assist in the game while
Derek Freeman (Newburyport, Massachusetts) and McMann had the other two goals. Kulevich's two-point game is his third of the season and sixth of his career as the captain extended his career-best point streak to five games.
Â
Arizona State took a 1-0 lead with 12:47 left in the first period as Rowe scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal for the first of his career. Rowe created a turnover in the neutral zone and skated in on Finn where he backhanded the puck past Finn on the one-on-one breakaway.
Â
Colgate tied up the game early in the second period as McMann picked up his fourth goal of the season.
Brett Corkey (Calgary, Alberta) created an offensive rush after a diving poke check and
Evan Peterson (Lakeville, Minnesota) touched the puck to McMann who raced into the offensive zone. McMann's initial shot was saved by Pashovitz but a Sun Devils' defenseman batted the puck back to the goal over the goaltender's left shoulder and McMann crashed the rebound to jam the puck home.
Â
The Sun Devils reclaimed the lead just over a minute and a half later as Robbie Baillargeon netted his eighth goal of the season on the power play after he one-timed a pass from Pasichnuk. Jakob Stridsberg doubled the Sun Devils' lead to 3-1 with 6:16 left in the second period after rifling a slap shot past Finn.
Â
Freeman got the Raiders back within a goal 32 seconds after Stridsberg's goal to make it 3-2.
Jake Kulevich dug the puck out of the right corner and played it to Harrison filling in by the blue line. Harrison blasted a shot on goal that Freeman perfectly redirected past Pashovitz with 5:44 left in the second.
