Raiders Roll Past Gaels In Tuneup

Colgate uses seven different goal scorers to knock off Gaels in exhibition contest Saturday at Starr Rink

– Colgate tallied three goals in each of the first two periods to cruise to a 7-1 victory over Queens University (Ont.) in an exhibition men's ice hockey contest Saturday at Starr Rink.
 
Junior Ryan Johnston tallied three points on a goal and two assists to highlight a potent Raiders attack that saw seven different players score goals as it finished with 44 shots in the contest. Senior Daniel Gentzler and junior Kyle Baun notched a goal and assist apiece while senior Spiro Goulakos added two assists.

How It Happened
- Freshman Mike Panowyk opened the scoring just 5:27 into the contest as he teamed up with fellow newcomer Evan Peterson to put Colgate in front, 1-0.  
- The Raiders would score twice in the final 2:08 of the opening period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Senior Daniel Gentzler converted a shorthanded opportunity at the 17:52 mark while sophomore Andrew Black found the back of the net with just 75 seconds after Gentzler's goal on an even-strength tally during the final minute of the frame.
- Colgate doubled its lead to 6-0 with three goals in the second period. Freshman Sebastian Weberg opened the scoring with an even-strength goal while Baun and Johnston added power play tallies later in the period.
- The two teams traded goals in the third period. Junior Mike Borkowski expanded the Colgate margin to 7-0 with a power play goal at the 1:05 mark of the period before Eric Ming got Queens on the board with a short-handed effort with 4:41 clock to close out the scoring.
 
Between The Pipes
- Sophomore Charlie Finn got the start in goal for Colgate. He allowed one goal and made 15 saves in 44:41.
- Freshman Bruce Racine replaced Finn and made four saves over the final 15:19 of the contest.
- Kevin Bailie played all 60 minutes in goal for Queens and finished with 37 saves.
 
Inside The Boxscore
- Colgate finished with a 44-20 shot margin in the contest as it out-shot Queens in all three periods (16-7, 16-8, 12-5)
- The Raiders were 3-5 on the power play while the Gaels were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
- Colgate held a 34-22 advantage in the faceoff circle with Borkowski leading the way with nine faceoff wins.
