HAMILTON – Colgate women's hockey saw first-years
Megan Sullivan and
Annika Zalewski net markers to help lift the Raiders 2-1 over Providence on Sunday afternoon.
Colgate scored in the opening period but saw the Friars answer just before the first intermission to knot the score. Then six minutes into the final frame Zalewski tallied the eventual game-winner to give Colgate the victory.
The Raiders first goal came after the Friars were called for tripping. With Colgate on the power play,
Shelby Perry and
Nicole Gass worked the puck around the blue line before finding Sullivan for the score.

Then after Providence had pulled even,
Miriam Drubel and
Breanne Wilson-Bennett teamed up to help Zalewski record her first collegiate goal and game-winner.
Junior
Ashlynne Rando was solid in net pushing aside 15 shots for Colgate.
The Raiders are back on home ice Oct. 31 when they kick off ECAC Hockey play hosting No. 9-ranked Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. in Starr Rink. Live stats and video will be available at game time.

Period Breakdown• The opening frame saw both teams net markers.
- Colgate recorded a power play goal after Providence was called for tripping. The Raiders moved the puck around the blue line before Gass sent it over to Perry on the wing. The rookie then found Sullivan in the high slot, where she finished it into the lower-left corner of the goal.
- Providence equalized with a little more than two minutes left to play in the period when Brittney Thunstrom intercepted a pass on a Colgate power play. The junior skated up center ice before shooting it past Rando, knotting the score.
• During the middle period Colgate fired off nine shots to the Friars five but were unable to find the back of the net.
• A little more than six minutes into the third frame, Zalewski put the Raiders up 2-1 after she registered her first career goal.
- With the Raiders in the Friars defensive zone Wilson-Bennett tried her luck on net. When her initial shot sailed wide, Drubel collected the loose puck and sent it back to the rookie. The Markham, Ontario, native then found Zalewski in front of the net, where the first-year slid it past Providence's goaltender Sarah Bryant for the game-winner.
Straight From The Source•
Head coach Greg Fargo (on the positives he's seen in his team early in the season): "We have a really good group. It's a lot of fun coming into the rink everyday and coaching them.
"We're getting better every day and the team is really grasping onto the things we are trying to get across. Anytime you have a group that loves to be taught and coached it's really easy and a lot of fun to be around."
"We've been working hard and we are slowly finding ways to win those close games. Different from the result last night I really liked the way our team finished today and we competed right to the final buzzer, which was great to see."
