HAMILTON –
The Colgate men's basketball team saw Army score with 21 seconds remaining to ultimately steal a 66-63 victory here Wednesday night.

"Basketball is a game of runs," Colgate head coach Matt Langel said. "It's a game of swings. We made our run and we had a good chance to score on a couple more plays, but we missed and then they do a good job of pushing the ball. So our miss on offense didn't allow us to get our defense set and they do a nice job of getting the open guys the ball."

After Colgate held the one-point advantage with 36 seconds left, Army's Dylan Cox finished off a layup to give the Black Knights the one-point edge at 64-63 with 21 seconds to play. The Raiders had a good look at the basket from Damon Sherman-Newsome with five seconds left but were unable to convert as Army then secured their victory from the charity stripe after two made free throws.

Colgate (7-11, 1-6 PL) received a career-high night from Ethan Jacobs, who posted 22 points in the contest after going 5-of-9 from downtown. He also added five rebounds and two blocks to his already impressive night.

"He did a good job," Langel added of his junior transfer. "He's a good shooter. And when the defense gives him shots, we need to find him and he needs to step up and make them.

"That's the story of our team really. We try to take what the defense gives us, but for me that's not good enough. We need to find a way to be a little bit more mentally and physically tough to make those small plays that are keeping us from winning these games."

Sherman-Newsome and Murphy Burnatowski also tallied 11 points, while Luke Roh pulled down a team-high six boards and three steals. Austin Tillotson led all players with six assists.

The Raiders shot 42 percent from the floor and 31 percent from long. They also converted on 13 of their 15 attempts from the free throw line. The teams both scored 24 points in the paint while the Black Knights outrebounded the Raiders, 36-26.

Army (10-8, 6-1 PL) registered three players in double-digits with Josh Herbeck's 16 points leading the way after going 5-of-8 from downtown. Kyle Wilson posted 15 points and Cox notched 12 points to close out the Black Knight top scorers. Cox also added 10 rebounds as well to lead all players.

Colgate held the one-point halftime lead despite being eight-points down with four minutes to play before the break. The Raiders had also held the Black Knights to just 33 percent shooting from the floor and 25 percent from the 3-point range during that half.

The Raiders then started the second 20 minutes on a 12-2 run to create the game's largest margin at 42-31. Jacobs had eight of those points during that stretch.

Army responded, however, going on a 15-2 run over the course of four minutes to earn its first lead since there the one-minute mark of the first half. The Black Knights hit four treys during that span, including two from the hands of Herbeck.

Colgate rallied to retake the lead at 51-50 with eight minutes to play following a Burnatowski layup, but the Black Knights would again use an 9-0 run to create an eight-point margin between the teams with 4:48 remaining in the game.

The Raiders answered, going on a 12-4 run to take back the one-point edge at 63-62 with 36 seconds left after Tillotson drained two good free throws.

On the other side of the court, Army missed its first attempt at the basket to go ahead but an offensive rebound and put back from Cox gave the Black Knights the lead with 21 seconds remaining.

Colgate had an opportunity with five seconds left to grab the lead again but was unable to convert.

The Black Knights ultimately secured their victory with two makes at the charity stripe with 4.5 seconds left. The Raiders tried to throw up a desperation shot but it fell just short of the rim.

Colgate is back in action Saturday when it travels to Loyola for a 7 p.m. tip off with the Greyhounds in Reitz Arena.
