PRINCETON, N.J. – Led by a four-goal first period, the Colgate women's ice hockey team blew past Princeton 6-1 Friday night at the Hobey Baker Rink.
“I really like how we were a 60 minute team tonight,” head coach
Greg Fargo said. “Our team stepped up tonight in a game that really counted. We started the game with a great shift and never let up. We got some really strong efforts all throughout our lineup tonight.”
Colgate (9-16-3) earned its fourth ECAC Hockey win in the game. The Raiders got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first goal just 1:11 into the initial period.
Taylor Craig knocked in her fourth goal of the season, beating Princeton's Kimberly Newell on the left side to put Colgate up 1-0.
Midway through the period, the Raiders grabbed two more goals, two minutes apart.
Miriam Drubel scored the eventual game winner at the 10:47 mark, while
Jocelyn Simpson added to the Raiders total exactly two minutes later with her own goal to extend the Colgate lead to 3-0.
With five seconds remaining in the opening period,
Rachel Walsh added Colgate's fourth goal to make it Colgate's best opening period this season.
In the next two periods, Colgate would increase its lead after
Megan Wickens and
Brittany Phillips both grabbed goals. Wickens' goal was No. 1 for her this season, while Phillips notched her 10th.
Stephanie Giannopoulos assisted on Colgate's first, third and fifth goals.
Ashlynne Rando pushed aside 18 shots in the win, earning the rookie her seventh overall victory this season. The Raiders also snapped the Tigers' three-game win streak.
“Our challenge now is to bottle up that effort, focus and continue to approach our schedule one game at a time," Fargo said.
Princeton (9-13-2) received its lone goal from Kelly Cooke 18 seconds into the final period. Her goal was assisted by Corey Stearns, who won the faceoff and grabbed her 23rd assist this year. Kimberly Newell made eight saves for Princeton, while Ashley Holt came in during the final two periods to stop 12 Raiders shots.
Phillips would push the Raiders back up by five when she fired one past Holt a little over two minutes later. The Tigers were unable to recover from the Raiders big first period and fell to Colgate as the final buzzer sounded.
The Raiders hit the ice tomorrow (Saturday) night when they travel to face the Bobcats of Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. The Bobcats currently sit at a record of 16-9-3 and 10-5-2 in ECAC Hockey play.
