HAMILTON – Three Colgate players skated their last regular season game in Starr Rink on Saturday afternoon as the Colgate women's ice hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 5-ranked Harvard.
Colgate (9-19-3) grabbed goals from
Brittany Phillips and
Katie Case.
Melissa Kueber assisted on both scores, while
Megan Wickens also added a helper on Phillips' goal.
Ashlynne Rando made 30 saves, including 17 in the initial period.
Harvard (19-4-2) received two goals from Kaitlin Spurling and one each from Mary Parker, Sarah Edney and Kalley Armstrong. Spurling finished the night with three points after she assisted on Parker's goal. Laura Bellamy pushed aside 14 Colgate shots for her 11th win this season.
The Crimson quickly got on the board, scoring two power play goals in the first five minutes. Colgate was called for cross checking 21 seconds into the initial period. Harvard was able to convert on the man-up opportunity when Parker fired one past Rando's right shoulder 1:29 into the period.
Colgate was again called for a penalty but this time it was for hooking, giving the Crimson another power play opportunity. With help from the extra skater, Harvard notched its second goal of the night 23 seconds into the power play. Michelle Picard took the initial shot on net that was saved by Rando. Before the rookie was able to fall on the puck, Spurling found the rebound and put it in the back of the net.
The Raiders cut the Crimson lead in half when Phillips found the goal 7:28 into the first period. Wickens made a great pass to Kueber, who set up Phillips in front of the net. The senior slid one past Bellamy for her 14th goal this year.
Harvard would add two more goals throughout the middle frame. At the 7:14 mark, Sarah Edney fired the puck from the point through traffic. The puck somehow found the back of the net after Rando was screened on the play to extend the Crimson lead to 3-1. They knocked in their second of the period when Samantha Reber found Spurling for her second of the game.
Colgate would not go away, however, tacking back one of those goals two minutes after Spurling's. Harvard was called for two quick penalties, giving the Raiders a chance at a 5-on-3 opportunity. Case found her second of the season after she rebounded in a Kueber initial shot, cutting the Crimson lead to 4-2.
Harvard tacked on a fifth goal in the third period to increase its lead back to three goals at 5-2. Armstrong scored the marker with 13:49 remaining to seal the win.
The Raiders finish out their last two regular season ECAC Hockey games this weekend when they travel to Union and Rensselaer. They face the Dutchwomen on Friday at 7 p.m., and follow that up with a contest at RPI on Saturday at 4 p.m.
