BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jocelyn Simpson scored the game's first and last goals to lift the Colgate women's ice hockey team over Vermont 4-3 in extra time on Sunday afternoon.

“There were some great individual efforts today, some ending up on the scoresheet, others didn't but there were plenty who contributed all around that led us to today's win against a stingy Vermont team,” head coach Greg Fargo said.

After taking the lead three different times throughout the game the Raiders (5-12-2) used extra time to slip one past the Vermont netminder to give them their first overtime win this season. Colgate received goals from Simpson, Brittany Phillips and Katie Case in regulation but it was Simpson's overtime winner that gave the Raiders the win.

“Today I really liked how we kept finding a way to get the next goal,” Fargo added. “We never quit, even after they scored late in regulation. We certainly worked hard and it was nice to get a good bounce in OT (overtime) to cap off a good game.”

Senior captain Jenna Klynstra aided on three of the Colgate goals, sliding her into 10th all-time in program history for career assists.  Ashlynne Rando made 23 saves in the win.

Vermont (6-10-2) fought back each time the Raiders took the lead. The Catamounts saw goals from Klara Myren, Erin Wente, and Emily Walsh. Vermont's Roxanne Douville stopped 33 shots throughout the game.

The Raiders were the first to strike off a power play goal by Simpson just 1:07 into the game. She collected the loose puck in front of the goal and fired it past Douville for the early lead. Phillips and Melissa Kueber were awarded assists on the play.

Less than four minutes later the Catamounts answered off a rebounded shot. Amanda Pelkey made the initial shot on net, but Rando was there to come up with the save. Before she was able to fall on the rebound Myren pushed it past her to tie the game at one a piece.

Late into the second period, the Raiders took back the lead. Phillips redirected a Simpson shot to give Colgate the 2-1 advantage with four minutes left to play in the second.

The Catamounts would not go away however, scoring just 46 seconds into the final frame. Wente followed up a Myren shot by sliding the loose puck past Rando before she could grab the rebound.

Colgate notched its third goal of the game at the 5:35 mark in the third period. Simpson found Case with a perfect cross-ice pass, where she launched a low wrist shot past the goalie and into the back of the net. The goal gave the sophomore her first career goal in a Colgate uniform.

Vermont yet again came from behind to equalize at three a piece with less than two minutes to play. Led by Myren, the Catamounts created a good scoring opportunity with a quick slapshot on goal. Rando was there to make the first save but couldn't find the rebounded shot by Walsh, who snuck it in past her.

OVERTIME
With only one minute to play in overtime, Klynstra forced a Vermont turnover. Simpson found the free puck and fired a shot through the legs of Douville for the gamewinner.

The Raiders travel to nearby Syracuse on Tuesday for another non-conference matchup. They face the Orange at 7 p.m. in Tennity Ice Pavilion.
