Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With two minutes to play in the game, the Yale Bulldogs scored a security goal to confirm their 2-0 win over the Colgate women's ice hockey team Saturday afternoon.
Colgate (7-15-3) notched 31 shots throughout the game, with
Jenna Klynstra and
Brittany Phillips both having five.
Megan Wickens added four shots, three of which came in the final frame.
Ashlynne Rando made 29 saves in the contest and pushed aside 13 of those 29 in the third period to give the Raiders a chance to equalize.
Yale (4-16-1) saw two goals, one from rookie Jamie Haddad and the other from senior forward Alyssa Zupon in the closing minutes of the game. Haddad scored her go-ahead and game-winning goal at the 17:25 mark in the initial period. The Raiders tried to rally throughout the remaining periods, but the Bulldogs secured their win with another goal late in the third frame by Zupon. Jaimie Leonoff kept the Bulldogs on top by making 31 saves. She grabbed 13 saves in the second frame and then following that up by making 10 saves in the final period.
The Raiders were on the attack throughout much of the first period.
Katie Case fired a shot on Leonoff but she made a nice glove save to keep the game scoreless. Less than a minute later, Leonoff yet again made an amazing save but this time on a shot by Drubel, who tried to slide one in five-hole.
After killing off the initial Bulldogs power play midway through the first, Yale converted on its second opportunity. Haddad rebounded the puck in to earn her seventh goal this season. Rando made the initial stop on a Janelle Ferrara redirection but couldn't get her pad down quick enough to save the rebounded shot by Haddad, putting Yale up 1-0.
The Bulldogs kept their 1-0 advantage as the closing seconds ticked off the clock in the middle frame. Each team had two power play opportunities throughout the period but both were unsuccessful in putting one in the back of the net. The Raiders grabbed five shots to Yale's three on those opportunities.
Colgate tried to find the equalizing goal in the third period, but each time Leonoff was there to make the stop. She made a game-saving stop against
Taylor Volpe with 6:28 left to play.
Things remained exciting throughout the rest of the game as the Raiders tried to find that tying goal. It wasn't until the 18:00 minute that the Bulldogs tacked on their security goal. Zupon won the faceoff and found Jamie Grey, who fired the puck on net. Zupon, who had skated close to the goal after she passed over to Grey, deflected the shot into the back of the net past Rando.
The Raiders fell to the Bulldogs for the second time this season and move to 2-9-3 in ECAC Hockey play. They are back on home ice this weekend when they welcome Rensselaer on Friday and Union on Saturday.
Friday's 7 p.m. game is the team's annual
Autism Awareness Game, so they encourage all who attend to wear blue in support of the great cause. They follow that game up with another ECAC Hockey matchup on Saturday at 4 p.m.
