Phillips Completes Hat Trick to Lift Raiders

Assistant captain Brittany Phillips scored a hat trick in Colgate's 3-2 overtime win Saturday against RIT. She now has eight on the season to lead the team.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Senior Brittany Phillips scored the game-winning goal at the 3:28 mark in overtime to seal the 3-2 win for the Colgate women's ice hockey team over RIT Saturday afternoon.

Colgate (6-13-2) saw Phillips grab all three of its goals to give the senior her first hat trick of the season. The Raiders rallied from two goals down to score the games final three goals. Rookie goaltender Ashlynne Rando grabbed 32 shot throughout the game. Colgate also earned its second overtime victory this season.

"After a slow start in the first period, I really liked how we responded for the final forty minutes," head coach Greg Fargo said. "It was a very gritty effort by our whole team. I am very pleased with the result but we have to play that way for 60 or 65 minutes heading into ECAC play next weekend."

RIT (9-10-3) received goals from Marissa Maugeri and Carly Payerl. Before today the Tigers had been 6-0 on the season when they scored the game's first goal. The loss also snapped a four game unbeaten streak. Erin Zach, Lindsay Grigg, and Morgan Scoyne were all award assists in the contest. Netminder Ali Binnington made 20 saves in the defeat.

The Tigers took the 1-0 advantage at the 12:58 mark in the initial period. Zach won the faceoff and found Maugeri, who quickly fired a shot past Rando. The goal gave Maugeri her third of the season.

A little over five minutes later RIT converted on a power play opportunity after Colgate was called for hooking. Thanks to the help of Grigg and Scoyne, Payeri put one past Rando giving them the 2-0 lead. RIT was able to limit the Raiders scoring chances in the first stanza outshooting Colgate, 12-4.

In the second period the Raiders cut the lead in half after Phillips scored her sixth of the season. RIT was called for slashing, giving Colgate a power play opportunity. Miriam Drubel found Phillips, who smashed one past Binnington.

Colgate killed off back-to-back power play chances by the Tigers throughout the middle period. Rando stopped five RIT shots on goal throughout the two power plays.

The tying goal came at the 11:06 mark in the third period. Phillips knocked in her second of the game on a shot from the left wing. Jenna Klynstra grabbed her 11th assist of the season on the goal. Even with a 9-7 shot advantage in the last nine minutes the Raiders couldn't find the go-ahead goal, sending them into their fourth overtime game this year.

OVERTIME
Colgate was called for a checking penalty just 1:20 into overtime. The 5x6 advantage gave the Tigers their sixth power play attempt. After killing off the power play, the Raiders responded eight seconds later with Phillips' game-winner. The unassisted goal came at the 3:28 mark in the final period and secured Colgate's sixth win this season.

The Raiders are back on the ice next weekend when they welcome Clarkson and St. Lawrence for two ECAC League games. They face the Golden Knights on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Saints on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both games will be played in Starr Rink.
