Women's Hockey Edged By Brown, 3-2

The team will complete regular-season play next weekend, battling for a spot in the ECAC Hockey Playoffs.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (2/11/12)
– Despite holding an early lead in the first period and then making a comeback in the second, the Colgate women's hockey team could not reclaim its lead, dropping a 3-2 decision to Brown on Saturday night in Meehan Auditorium.
 
Freshman Melissa Kueber and junior Brittany Phillips scored one goal each for the Raiders while senior goaltender Kimberly Sass had 26 saves in the game.
 
Colgate (10-19-2, 5-13-2 ECAC Hockey) jumped out to an early lead in the first period, finding the back of the net just 20 seconds into play. Junior Jenna Klynstra won the opening faceoff and knocked it to Kueber who then fired it into the frame to give her team a 1-0 lead. The Raiders carried their offensive momentum through the first seven minutes of the period, earning the first power play opportunity of the game but could not extend their lead. Shortly after completing its penalty, Brown then found itself with an extra skater opportunity that helped generate its offense but it could not capitalize. Both teams continued to search for a goal until the 18:01 mark when the Bears were able find an equalizer to tie the game at 1-1 going into the second frame.
 
Brown carried its thirst for scoring into the second 20 minutes of play, controlling majority of the offense in the first few minutes of the period. The Bears' persistence soon paid off with a goal at the 10:53 mark to claim their first lead of the game, 2-1. Finding itself down by one goal, the Raiders came alive with a series of shots on net as it put pressure on Brown's goalie. The Bears were then able to earn a second power play opportunity but that did not faze Colgate, which then tallied a short-handed goal from Phillips at the 14:48 mark to tie the game once again at 2-2. The Bears answered back less than thirty seconds later with a third goal at the 15:17 mark during the same power play opportunity, which eventually proved to be the game winner after a scoreless third period.
 
Kimberly Sass had 26 saves while Brown's Aubree Moore had 30. Colgate went scoreless on its four power play opportunities while the Bears scored on one of their five opportunities.
 
The Raiders will close their regular-season schedule next weekend when they host ECAC Hockey opponents St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday, Feb. 17and Saturday, Feb. 18 t 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively. The results of next weekend's games will determine whether Colgate earns a spot in the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey Playoffs.
