BETHLEHEM, Pa. (2/11/12) – Sophomore guard
Pat Moore matched his career-high with 23 points by making seven three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as Lehigh closed the game with a 32-11 run to top the Colgate men's basketball team a 89-69 Saturday night at Stabler Arena.
Colgate (7-18, 1-9) held a 58-57 lead with 13:17 remaining in regulation, before the Mountain Hawks exploded with 27-3 run over the next 10 minutes to build their largest lead of the game 84-61 to secure their seventh win Patriot League play.
Moore finished the game 8-of-10 from the field, including 7-of-8 from downtown to record a season-high 23 points, to go along with five rebounds to lead the Raiders, while junior center
John Brandenburg also scored in double figures with 10 points. Senior's
Nick Pascale and
Mike Venezia scored six points apiece, while Pascale recorded his 100th career blocked shot to become just the fifth Raider in school history to score 500 or more points, grab 500 or more rebounds and block 100 or more shots. Venezia scored all of his points from downtown to pass Jon Simon '07 for fourth all-time in school history with 187 made three pointers.
Colgate scored the first five points of the game, including a three-pointer from Moore, before the Mountain Hawks responded with six-straight points to take their first lead of the game. But Moore responded with another three to give the Raiders an 8-6 lead during the first media timeout. The Raiders then continued to feel it from downtown as Moore and Venezia made three-straight to open a 19-11 lead with 12:16 remaining. But Lehigh had an answer as it responded with an 18-7 run to reclaim the lead 29-26 with 6:34 left. But the Raiders closed the half with a 20-11 run to take a 46-40 lead into the locker room. Moore finished the first half a perfect 5-for-5 from downtown to lead all scorers with 15 points.
Lehigh (19-7, 7-3) scored the first five points of the second half to trim the Raiders lead to 46-45, before Moore and
Mitch Rolls connected on back-to-back trifectas to give Colgate a 52-45 lead with 18 minutes remaining. The Raiders would stay ahead until C.J. McCollum stole a pass from Venezia resulting in an easy dunk to give Lehigh the lead 60-58 with 12:35 remaining and it never looked back.
It was a tale of two halves as both team finished shooting 50 percent from the field. Colgate shot 68 percent the first half, but just 33 percent in the second, while Lehigh shot 34 percent in the first half, before knocking down 70 percent of its shots in the second. The Mountain Hawks also won the battle on the boards 33-22 and forced 13 Colgate turnovers, while dishing out 19 assists.
Colgate will continue Patriot League play when it hosts Army on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access. The Raiders will also wear pink shoes during the game to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
