CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Senior Brittany Phillips scored Colgate's lone goal Friday night after the women's ice hockey team fought hard, but fell to No. 7 Harvard, 4-1.

Colgate (3-10-1) was led by Phillips, who scored her fourth goal of the season. Katie Case (4) and Jocelyn Simpson (2) aided on Phillips' goal at the 18:50 mark in the first frame. Colgate ended Harvard's streak of 15 consecutive penalties killed after Phillips smashed one into the back of the net off a rebound on a Colgate power play. Freshman Ashlynne Rando grabbed 35 saves throughout the game.

“We played hard and focused for 40 minutes against Harvard tonight,” head coach Greg Fargo said. “The goals against us in the 2nd period were a result of a few mental lapses. There were a lot of positives tonight, we played a good team game.”

Harvard (5-1-0) saw goals from Samantha Reber, Hillary Crowe, Sarah Edney and Hilary Hayssen. The game-winning goal came five minutes into the second period with Crowe scoring her second goal of the year.  Laura Bellamy made 10 stops in her fourth game started for the Crimson.

Reber got the Crimson off to a good start scoring just 2:16 into the game. Crowe found Reber in front of the crease and she redirected the puck past Rando to put Harvard on top 1-0.

The Raiders had some good looks on net throughout the first period and were able to equalize on Phillips' goal late in the period.

Throughout the second frame the Crimson took back the lead, making the score 2-1 after Crowe put one in the back of the net. Colgate was limited to one shot throughout the period, which came off a breakaway opportunity by Rachel Walsh. After being shorthanded due to a Harvard power play, the Raiders found Walsh, who was breaking down the ice. She beat one defender before firing a shot on net. Bellamy came up with the huge save, however it gave Colgate a great chance to once again equalize the score.

The Crimson added to their lead on a power play goal by Edney. She took a shot from the left faceoff circle that sailed just past Rando and into the back of the net. Harvard created a three-goal advantage two minutes later after Hayssen scored her first goal of the season. Harvard picked up the loose puck following a scramble in front of the net and found Hayssen, who was positioned on the right circle. She received the puck and placed it through a mixture of players on goal.

Colgate couldn't manage to grab the goals needed to recover from the three-goal deficit and fell to the Crimson for the second straight year.

“We got some good looks on the power play and our penalty kill was strong,” added Fargo. “Our special teams and goaltending gave us a chance tonight.”

The Raiders are back on the ice tomorrow afternoon when they travel to face the Big Green of Dartmouth at 4 p.m. in Thompson Arena.
