Raiders Fight Hard Against No. 2 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. –
The Colgate women's ice hockey team battled a very tough No. 2 Cornell team Friday afternoon but fell 9-0 to the Big Red in Lynah Rink.

Colgate (3-8-1) was led by Taylor Volpe who notched three shots in the game. Megan Wickens, Jocelyn Simpson, Katie Case and Melissa Kueber all added two shots each. Both Susan Allen (10 saves) and Ashlynne Rando (16 saves) saw action in the game.

Cornell (7-1) saw Brianne Jenner score four goals while Taylor Woods and Laura Fortino both added two. Hayleigh Cudmore also notched a goal for the Big Red. Katelyn Pippy made 13 saves throughout the game.

The Raiders were the first to earn a powerplay opportunity after Cornell was called for tripping three minutes into the first period. A call on Colgate evened the players on the ice. Cornell was able to score on a 4x4, grabbing the first goal of the game after Fortino put one in the back of the net.

In another penalty filled 4x4 in the first, Jenner got the deflected backhand to put Cornell up 2-0. The goal originated from a scrum in front of the goal. The assist on the play came from Jillian Saulnier.

Colgate was called for tripping, giving Cornell another powerplay opportunity. Fortino was able to capitalize, making the scored 3-0 for the Big Red with 12:05 left in the first period.

As the second period started Colgate earned themselves a five on three powerplay situation. The Raiders grabbed three different shots from Simpson, Brittany Phillips and Melissa Kueber but were unable to put one past Pippy.

Cornell would score four goals during the period on three goals by Jenner and one goal from Wood. The Raiders tried to rally on shots by Volpe and Wickens but were not able to grab that first goal.  

Throughout the third period Cornell would notch two more goals. The rematch with the Big Red will occur tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Starr Rink.
