HAMILTON –
The Colgate women's hockey team hosted 10th-ranked Northeastern in its home opener on Friday night and despite the Huskies coming away with a 4-0 win, the Raiders hung tough throughout the contest.

Colgate (0-3) got a great performance from Susan Allen as she made 33 stops and allowed only two goals as two of the four scores were empty-netters for the Huskies. Jenna Klynstra led the way in the shot department with six shots, including three in the second period.

Northeastern (1-0) had four different goal scorers and was led by Katie MacSorley, who posted two points with a goal and an assist. Chloe Desjardins had to stay on her toes for most of the night as she made 29 stops to earn the shutout.

“I thought it was a good back-and-forth hockey game tonight,” said head coach Greg Fargo. “They controlled most of the play in the first period, but we responded really well and saw improvement in the things we have been working on. We established a fore check and we were able to get out of our zone pretty well.”

The Huskies struck first late in the opening period on a tic-tac-toe play in front of the Colgate net. The top line of Kendall Coyne, Casey Pickett and Paige Savage were all involved the goal as Coyne found Pickett cross-ice with a pass. Pickett then slid the puck through the crease to Savage for the tap-in score to put Northeastern up 1-0 with 1:20 remaining in the period.

Colgate had a couple of chances in the first with Brittany Phillips earning a breakaway, but was slashed on the way to the net and earned a power play. The next chance came with Jocelyn Simpson skating behind the defense and she got a shot off that was stop by Desjardins. The Huskies controlled most of the period with a 13-6 shot advantage, but Colgate held its own.

In the second period, Northeastern added to its lead with Jordan Hampton scoring her first of the season. After a scrum in front of Allen, MacSorley shifted the puck to the point and Hampton fired a shot that deflected off a Colgate stick and behind Allen for the 2-0 advantage with 10:13 left in the frame. The Raiders did look good on the power play late in the second with multiple chances, but Desjardins came up with some big stops to keep Colgate off the board.

Northeastern added to its lead late in the third frame with a pair of shorthanded empty-netters in the final 40 seconds. Coyne and MacSorley were the two recipients of the empty net goals to close out the scoring at 4-0. Colgate was able to get 12 shots on goal in the final period and had three power play opportunities.

The Huskies won the shot battle by a 37-29 margin and each team had many chances with the extra skater. Northeastern had five opportunities and Colgate received seven power plays and neither team could find the net.

“We didn't get rewarded for our hard work and sometimes that happens,” said Fargo. “I like the effort from our team and you can see the progress we are making,”

Colgate will be back on the ice tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. as the Raiders host New Hampshire at Starr Rink.
