HAMILTON – The Raiders women's hockey team notched their second consecutive win Saturday afternoon after they defeated UConn 4-1 in Starr Rink.
Colgate (2-4) was led by
Jocelyn Simpson who had two goals in the game.
Taylor Volpe and
Katelyn Parker also notched a goal in the win.
Ashlynne Rando earned the start in net for the Raiders making 35 saves.
"Tonight was another strong effort from our team," head coach
Greg Fargo said. "Connecticut came out and put us on our heels in the first period. We did a nice job to hang on and kill off a couple of penalties early in the game. We really liked how our team played collectively especially in our own end."
UConn (0-4-1) saw its lone goal scored by Sarah MacDonnell, with the assist to Kiana Nauheim. Elaine Chuli had 25 saves in the game.
The Raiders and Huskies played to a scoreless first half before Colgate finally took the lead in the second period. Only five minutes into the start of the period Colgate saw a goal by Volpe. She picked up the puck in the corner of the rink and circled around a few defenders before taking a shot on net through a screen.
Megan Wickens was awarded the assist.
Colgate tried to add to their lead off great puck handling by Wickens. She used her stick skills to fly past the UConn defender with ten minutes left in the period. The shot went just wide but kept the momentum with the Raiders.
Parker would eventually give the Raiders the two goal cushion with two minutes left in the second.
Taylor Craig started the play by finding
Cacey Maciejewski. She looked up to see Parker at the top of the right circle who was able to put it away.
Early into the third period, Simpson secured a 3-0 lead for Colgate after she notched her second goal of the season on a breakaway opportunity. She placed the puck in the top right hand corner of the net, before Chuli was able to get a hand on it. The assists on the play went to

UConn cut the lead in half when Nauheim took a slap shot from the Colgate point. The puck was tipped by MacDonnell and fell in the corner of the crease. MacDonnell saw the dead puck and dove in to tap it away for the goal.
The Huskies decided to pull the goalie with two minutes left to play in the game. Colgate was able to utilize and score its four and final goal of the game. Simpson scored her second goal of the game on an empty net with 1:37 remaining in the game. She received the puck from Klynstra.
Colgate will be back in action in two weeks when they take on the Bulldogs of Yale and the Bears from Brown. The Raiders will face Yale on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. and Brown on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. both at Starr Rink.
