HAMILTON – The Colgate women's hockey team earned its first win of the 2012-13 season in its 5-3 win over Connecticut Friday night at Starr Rink.
Colgate (1-4) saw goals from five different players:
Jenna Klynstra,
Taylor Craig,
Melissa Kueber,
Rachel Walsh and
Miriam Drubel.
Susan Allen made the start in net for the Raiders, earning 25 saves in the game.
“I'm very proud of our teams play tonight from start to finish,” head coach
Greg Fargo said. “Everybody contributed to this win and I was glad to see our group get rewarded for their efforts. We stayed composed with a lead and were able to come through on the power play in the third period tonight.”
UCONN (0-3-1) was led Kayla Campero, Brittany Berisoff, and Maude Blain who all notched a goal. Elaine Chuli had 34 saves.
After a scoreless first period, Colgate wasted no time getting on the board in the second frame as Klynstra tallied her first of the season, one minute into the period. There was a big hit in the corner and Klynstra came out with the puck, circled to the slot and fired a shot past the glove of Chuli for the 1-0 advantage.
The Raiders added to the lead at the 8:52 mark of the second with Craig also tallying her first of the year.
Nicole Gass charged the net and put a shot on Chuli that she saved, but Craig was there for the rebound to make it 2-0 Colgate. Connecticut answered with its first goal, coming 23 seconds after Craig's goal. Campero interrupted a Colgate clearing pass and put the puck into the net to cut the lead to 2-1 going into the third period.
Kueber increased the lead back to two goals at 3-1 with assists coming from Klynstra and
Brittany Phillips. The goal came on a power play with a nice feed from Klynstra to Kueber where she put it home. It didn't take long for the Raiders to push the advantage to 4-1 on another power play chance. This time it was Walsh tallying the goal with assists to Drubel and
Megan Wickens.
The Huskies cut the lead down to 4-2 with Berisoff scoring unassisted at the 4:25 mark of the third period. Colgate would then be called for covering the puck in the crease when UConn had a power play and the extra attacker on the ice. Blain took the penalty shot that was awarded, beating Allen with a backhand, closing the gap to one at 4-3.
The Raiders would grab back the two-goal lead after UConn pulled the goalie. Drubel dove to earn the puck back from UConn and hit the empty net with under a minute to go in the game. Phillips and Craig were given assists on the play.
These two teams will be back on the ice tomorrow night at 4 p.m. at Starr Rink to finish out this two-game series.
