SCOUTING COLGATE (6-17, 3-5 PL)
The Raiders won for the fifth time in the past seven games with a 77-71 victory at Army on Saturday (Feb. 5). Colgate has improved to 6-17 after a 1-15 start, and won three of its past five League contests after an 0-3 start.
The Raiders rallied from a double-digit first-half deficit to post the win after Army went on a 23-8 run to take the 10-point lead, but
Joe Hoban sank a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to cut Colgate's gap to 39-32.
The Raiders scored eight straight points to take a 45-42 lead with 15:28 to play. The teams went back and forth for the next few minutes, but Colgate went ahead for good on a three-point play by
Mitch Rolls with 11:53 left which started a 13-2 run that gave the Raiders a 62-52 advantage with 7:37 left.
Colgate would push the lead to 68-55 before Army scored nine straight points to make it just a 68-64 game with 2:13 left. That was as close as the Black Knights would get, as Colgate put the game away with a 7-1 surge and went on to the 77-71 victory.
Rolls scored a career-high 23 points while making 9-of-12 shots and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and also dished out seven of the team's 14 assists. Hoban had his second straight 20-point game and also pulled down seven rebounds, and
Mike Venezia finished with 14.
SCOUTING LAFAYETTE (9-14, 4-4 PL)
The Leopards jumped out to a big first-half lead and made enough plays to hold on down the stretch for a 76-70 win over Holy Cross on Saturday. Lafayette took sole possession of third place in the Patriot League with a 4-4 record.
The Leopards scored nine consecutive points to jump ahead 14-4 eight minutes into the contest, and led by double digits for the final 10 minutes of the first half. A 9-2 run late in the period pushed the lead to 18 points and Lafayette took a 36-20 advantage into the break.
Holy Cross chipped away throughout the second half, trimming Lafayette's lead all the way down to 63-61 with just over three minutes to play. After the Crusaders missed a three-pointer with the chance to take the lead, Nick Petkovich canned a trey on the other end to push Lafayette's lead back to five at 66-61 with 2:52 left. A Levi Giese jumper gave Lafayette a 70-63 lead with 57 seconds left, but Holy Cross got as close as 72-70 with 25 seconds left. Lafayette made all six of its free throws in the final minute, and finished 13-of-15 for the game.
HOBAN AND MOORE SWEEP PL WEEKLY AWARDS
Colgate senior captain
Joe Hoban and freshman
Pat Moore were named the Patriot League Anaconda Player and Rookie of the Week. Hoban and Moore combined to give the Raiders a sweep of the weekly awards for the first time since Feb. 17, 2003.
Hoban earned his first Patriot League/Anaconda Player of the Week award after posting a pair of 20-point games in wins for the Raiders. Hoban recorded his first career double-double against Longwood with 22 points and 13 assists, then followed with 20 points and seven rebounds against Army.
Moore received his first Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week award after averaging 15.5 points and shooting over 65 percent in two wins for the Raiders. Moore did most of his damage in Wednesday's 97-86 win over Longwood, making 10-of-12 shots to finish with a career-high 23 points. He followed that up with eight points in Saturday's 77-71 win over Army.
1,000 POINTS AND COUNTING
Junior forward
Yaw Gyawu recently became the 28th player in school history to join the 1,000 point club. Gyawu leads Colgate in scoring this season with 12.7 points per game.
CLEANING THE GLASS
Junior center
Nick Pascale is one of four student-athletes in the Patriot League to average six or more rebounds and one blocked shot per game. Pascale ranks third in the Patriot League with 1.3 blocked shots and sixth with 6.7 rebounds per game.
RED-HOT COLGATE SHOOTS THE LIGHTS OUT
If you only saw Colgate play last week, you would have no idea the Raiders are last in the Patriot League in scoring offense and seventh in both overall and three-point field-goal percentage. Colgate did not look like that squad in the past two games, notching the best marks in the Patriot League this season at 66 percent overall (33-of-50) and 68.8 percent from three-point range (11-of-16) in a 97-86 win over Longwood on Wednesday and following it up by shooting over 50 percent (28-of-55) overall and nearly 59 percent (10-of-17) from three-point range in Saturday's win over Army.
THE DAVIS FILE
Head coach Emmett Davis (St. Lawrence, 1984) is in his 13th year in charge at Colgate, owning the most wins in school history with 164.
During coach Davis' decade long tenure, the Colgate program has been a model of consistency. In nine of his 12 seasons, Davis has led the Raiders to either the upper division of the Patriot League standings or advanced the team to the semifinals or finals of the conference tournament. From 2001-2004 the Raiders finished with three consecutive regular season winning records (2001-02…17-10, 2002-03…14-13, and 2003-04…14-13) and in 2007-08 the Raiders tied the school record for wins in a season with 18.
Davis reached another career milestone in November 2005, as Colgate defeated Matt Doherty's Florida Atlantic team 78-74 earning coach Davis his 100th career victory making him just the fifth coach in school history to win 100 games.
