Women’s Hockey Begins 2012 with Syracuse at Home

The team won the first meeting against Syracuse this season 3-1 on Oct. 19.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/31/11) – The Colgate women's hockey team will open the 2012 portion of the season with a home contest against Syracuse on Monday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. in Starr Rink.

The Raiders are coming off a 5-1 win over Vermont on Nov. 26 before falling to the Catamounts in the second game of the set 3-0 on Nov. 27. Junior Brittany Phillips leads the team with three goals and an assist in the win while classmate Jenna Klynstra had four points from four assists and freshman Taylor Volpe scored the game-winning goal and added an assist.
 
PHILLIPS LEADS THE WAY
Brittany Phillips continues to be a scoring force for Colgate (6-10-1, 2-4-1 ECAC Hockey). The forward leads the team with 20 points from eight goals and 12 assists. She is currently 12th in program history with 73 career points and is ninth in career goals with 34.
 
POINT LEADERS
Behind Phillips who has 20 points, is sophomore Jocelyn Simpson who is second on the team with 14 points from six goals and eight assists. Following them are freshman Melissa Kueber and sophomore Shannon Doyle who have 12 and 11 points respectively. Kueber has eight goals and four assists while Doyle has tallied two goals and nine assists.

SCORING IN NUMBERS
The team has had several players contribute to scoring this season and now has five Raiders with points in the double digits. The Raiders have 12 players with four or more points and 18 with at least one point, including goaltender Kimberly Sass. Combined, the team has a total of 113 points from 41 goals and 72 assists.

SASS APPROACHING PROGRAM RECORDS
Senior Kimberly Sass continues to have a solid performance in net for the Raiders. She is currently ranked second in program history with 2,058 career saves, is third in career wins with 30 and is fourth in career shut outs with seven. The goaltender currently has 432 saves for a .908 save percentage this season.
 
SERIES
Colgate continues to lead the all-time series 4-1-1 since it first met Syracuse in the 2008-09 season. This will be their second meeting this season, with the Raiders winning the first matchup 3-1 on Oct. 19 in Syracuse, N.Y. Colgate's only loss to the Orange was a 4-3 loss in the first meeting last season and its only tie was in the second meeting 4-4 in overtime.
 
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
The Orange (8-11-1, 0-1-1 College Hockey America) is coming off a 1-1 tie and a 2-1 loss to league opponent Robert Morris in a two-game set on the road on Dec. 9 and 10. The team has wins over New Hampshire, Rensselaer, Union, St. Cloud State and Connecticut and Linenwood twice, and has losses to No. 4 Minnesota, Northeastern, Colgate, Union, No. 2 Cornell, Rensselaer, Robert Morris and twice to Clarkson and Ohio State. Its only tie was with Robert Morris in its last game of the 2011 portion of the season on Dec. 10.
 
Syracuse is led by junior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and sophomore Margot Scharfe. Carrie-Mattimoe has 14 points from nine goals and five assists while Scharfe has six goals and seven assists for 13 points. In goal, the team is led by sophomore Kallie Billadeau who has played in 10 games and has 252 saves for a .894 save percentage.
