HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/29/11) - The Colgate Women's hockey team recorded its first shut out win of the season over ECAC Hockey Rival ,Yale, 4-0 on Saturday night at Starr Rink. 
 
Four different Raiders tallied scores for the win. Sophomore Jocelyn Simpson had one goal and an assist while junior Brittany Phillips and sophomore Shannon Doyle had two assists apiece. 
 
Both Colgate and Yale got off to a slow start in the first period with the Bulldogs notching nine shots on goal to the Raiders' four.  Neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the opening frame ended scoreless.
 
After a quiet start, Colgate (4-3-1, 1-1-1 ECAC Hockey) dominated the second period, outshooting the Bulldogs 17-3. Six minutes into play, Yale had a player put in the box for cross-checking, giving Colgate the extra skater. The Raiders did not hesitate to capitalize on the opportunity. Phillips fired a shot from the left circle that rebounded off the goalies pads to Simpson, who then knocked it in to put Colgate on top 1-0 at the 6:45 mark. Doyle was also credited with an assist. Just over two minutes later, the Raiders added a second goal when rookie Miriam Drubel tipped in a pass from Phillips at the far post to push their lead to 2-0. Simpson earned an assist on that play. Colgate then went up 3-0 at the end of the second period with a score from sophomore Taylor Volpe, who was helped by senior co-captain Amanda Kirwan and sophomore Megan Wickens. Volpe beat two defenders and then fired the puck top shelf over the glove of Yale's Genny Ladiges to score the goal.
 
The final period was similar to the second, with the Raiders outshooting Yale 15-7. Colgate carried its scoring momentum into the third frame, making a statement with its fourth goal of the night just 15 seconds into play. Rookie Melissa Kueber added the tally after knocking in a shot from Doyle. Junior Jessica Hootz served Doyle with a pass, earning her fourth assist of the season. The Bulldogs attempted to put themselves on the scoreboard throughout the rest of the period but could not find success, giving Colgate its first shutout win of the season, 4-0.

Senior Kimberly Sass earned the shutout win in net with 19 saves while Yale's Genny Ladiges had 32 stops. The Raiders went 2-for-6 on the power play while Yale was unable to score on five power play opportunities. 
 
Colgate returns to action next weekend when it travels to Niagara for a two-game set on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov 5.  Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
