HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/21/11) –
Sophomore Jeremy Price scored with 1:35 remaining in regulation to force overtime and gave the Colgate men's hockey team a 1-1 tie against Cornell in a defensive struggle on Friday night at Starr Rink.

The Raiders (3-18-2, 0-9-1 ECAC) got the goal from Price with the assists to senior captain Brian Day and classmate Francois Brisebois. Rookie Eric Mihalik made 18 saves in net, including a pair of huge stops in overtime to get Colgate the tie.

The Big Red (7-9-2, 5-5-1 ECAC) saw Locke Jillson score its lone goal with the only assist awarded to Sean Collins. Mike Garman made 24 stops in net with nine coming in the second period to keep the game scoreless.

“Both teams played hard,” said Colgate head coach Don Vaughan. “I was please with our effort tonight. We got behind in the third period and showed we could battle back. It has to be a builder for us.”

The first period ended up scoreless and Colgate had the best scoring chance, but the goal was waived off. Robbie Bourdon took a shot from the left point that was blocked and Thomas Larkin was in front. He looked to have put the Raiders up 1-0. However, it was determined after a review that he had kicked the puck into the net. Colgate got itself into trouble moments later after a five-minute major assessed to the Raiders for checking from behind. The team recovered with good defensive pressure and killed off the penalty, allowing just one shot.

The second period was more of the same. Each team played a defensive-minded period with both combining for 16 shots with Colgate holding a 9-7 advantage.

Jillson got the Big Red on the board first just 3:15 into the final frame with the assist to Collins. Jillson did a great job shielding the puck as he carried it from the right circle all the way to the slot in front. When he made his move, the Colgate defense got caught up with a pair of Cornell players and he was left all alone. He lifted a backhander above Mihalik's blocker and under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.

Colgate finally got on the board with 1:35 left in regulation. The Raiders called a timeout with an offensive zone faceoff. Colgate won the draw and hammered the puck around the boards and after it was chipped to Price from Day, the sophomore targeted the net with a nice wrister that made its way through traffic and past Garman to tie the game at one apiece.

In the extra frame, Colgate had the best chance of the two teams. Austin Smith received a pass on a 3-on-2 break and slid the puck over to Day. As he was about to hit the open net, a Cornell defender recovered just in time to deflect the puck high and out of play. The teams settled for three shots in the overtime with Colgate earning two.

The Raiders won the shot battle by a 25-19 margin and each team failed to score on the power play. Colgate went 0-for-2 on the man advantage, while Cornell had three opportunities, including a five-minute power play.

These two teams will be back at it tomorrow night at 7 p.m. from Lynah Rink in Ithaca as the series shifts west.
