HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/14/11) –
The Colgate men's hockey team dropped another one-goal game with a 2-1 loss on Friday night against No. 13/14 Union at Starr Rink.

Colgate (3-17-1, 0-8-1 ECAC) got its lone goal from rookie Jack McNamara with the assists going to senior Francois Brisebois and captain Brian Day. Rookie Eric Mihalik got the start in net and made 22 saves with eight apiece in the first two periods.

Union (14-6-3, 6-2-1 ECAC) saw Wayne Simpson and Josh Jooris net goals with Jooris scoring the gamewinner in the third. John Simpson and Kelly Zajac were given assists on Wayne Simpson's goal. Keith Kinkaid was solid in net with 24 saves to earn his 13th game of the season.

The first period was played evenly with neither team earning any quality scoring chances. Colgate went on the power play twice, but failed to capitalize and had only one shot. Senior Brian Day had a couple of chances in front of Kinkaid and tipped them both wide of the net. The Raiders did a good job of staying out of the penalty box. The Dutchmen had the advantage in shots at 8-6 after the opening frame.

Union scored first on its second power play chance of the night on a goal by Wayne Simpson. He got a pass from his brother John Simpson and broke into the offensive zone and put the puck on Mihalik. The rookie slowed the puck, but it found its way past the netminder and into the net for the 1-0 lead at the 15:01 mark of the second. Colgate had more shots in the second with an 11-9 advantage, but went 0-for 3 on the man advantage.

In the third period, Colgate made a mistake in its own end and Union made the Raiders pay for it. With 15:33 left in the game, the Dutchmen sent the puck into the offensive zone and Mihalik played the puck behind the net. He didn't see Jooris skating in from the opposite direction and when Mihalik banked the puck off the back boards it came right to Jooris. Mihalik tried to recover with a sliding save, but Jooris slipped it by the netminder for the 2-0 lead.

Colgate got one back with 11:34 remaining as McNamara scored his second of the season to make it 2-1. Brisebois found McNamara in the right slot and he put the puck on net and it got by Kinkaid who had been a wall up to that point. Day was given an assist on the play and now is one point away from 100 in his career.

Colgate outshot the Dutchmen, 25-24, in the contest, but the Raiders failed to score on five power play opportunities. Union scored one goal in three man advantage chances as Colgate played disciplined hockey for most of the game.

The Raiders will be back at Starr Rink tomorrow night as Colgate takes on No. 9/10 Rensselaer in a 7 p.m. contest.
